Has anybody else heard about Luanti/Minetest? It's this open source voxel game engine, and some people say it's like Minecraft. There's different games made for it, lots of mods, it even has VoxeLibre too.
I play this as an alternative to Minecraft, and the more I spend with it the more I honestly see less of a reason to get and install Minecraft. Some of the mods that I really like are Travelnet, hang glider, colored water, Everness, Ethereal NG, & SkinsDB as well as i3 which overhauls the inventory system completely.
I've yet to explore the multiplayer side of Luanti, though.

But that aside, have you heard of Luanti too? What are your thoughts on it?

This is my first time ever hearing of Luanti! I think it's neat! I like that it's open source.

For me specifically though, I don't really see a point. I think this would be great for someone who wants to play Minecraft but doesn't want to have to buy it, but for me, I've had Minecraft for over 10 years now. Minecraft still has more mods and resource packs, and I couldn't find any Luanti mods that were even similar to my favourites for Minecraft.

I would consider playing it if a friend of mine invited me to play with them, or if I saw a particular game type that really grabbed me, but I think that's about it TwT

yea i actually have it.

it's kinda okay, it's the only way i can get more modern Minecraft features - actual Minecraft even with heaps of optimisations will just run like shit on my old laptop. i could run it on a gaming PC and maybe a more modern mid-range laptop, but my laptop's from 2013 qwq

it's fine i think, i get some of the things on it are straight-up Minecraft 'clones' -- but i feel they're best for people with older/weaker hardware that can't play actual modern Minecraft for various reasons. my laptop literally plays Java Edition 1.12.2 at ~25FPS with OptiFine and things installed, and anything higher can be easily in single-digits  :drat:

I've been playing the heck out of it for a while now, so I'm a big fan. Aside from the fact that it's FOSS, here are the reasons I prefer it to Minecraft:
  • Easier to get local multiplayer going. I hate having an extra Minecraft account just to play with friends and family members
  • Much easier to mod for. Fewer changes in between updates, so mods don't get as broken, and mods can work with multiple games
  • Can run on a potato
  • No separate launcher for mods--it's all there in the Luanti game
  • No buggy, DRM-riddled Bedrock, no slow-as-molasses Java. Base game is written in C++, and the mods are done in Lua
  • In general, I trust the Luanti community in its development far more than I trust Microsoft, who seems to be trying to lock the Minecraft game down hard and harder lately (no hate to Mojang, they seem to be treating it well). Also, Minecraft seems to be more and more focused on PVP and combat, and that's just not my favorite part of the game. I like building and making cozy home bases.

Everness is my jam, and I've got a sprawling world that I'm having fun with. It takes a bit of getting used to, but I do like that if I have questions about how the game mechanics work, I can pull up the code itself and look at what conditions are taking place below the hood. I do understand that's not for everyone, though, so I've been thinking about making a small wiki for Voxelibre at some point.

I played it a long time ago, it was fine. A former friend of mine tried to have me and others play it a whole lot over Minecraft, saying that it made for a perfect replacement of Minecraft, which... Didn't go so well. As it's own thing it's pretty enjoyable, though.

Not too fond of the new name for it tho. Doesn't quite roll off the tongue
