hi! i love the indie web and small underground communities, but am also a shitposter at heart! so im wondering if u guys know any fun sites i could try that might combine these two fascinations!  :ozwomp:

I've played around with a couple websites that give me a taste of a fun small social media community, but they always die after a couple months or r primarily used by highschoolers, without much of an adult presence. idk if 20-somethings r just boring or what, but its rlly hard to find a fun spot to make silly little posts in a small community of like-minded adults.

so lmk if u guys know of any cool e-hangout spots i should try! if not, maybe i'll just have to get together w some codey friends and try making one ourselves! who knows!  :pc:  :seal:

Personally I love Pillowfort and Dreamwidth! PF user interface is more intuitive than DW, which is basically a livejournal code fork from many years ago, but the community skews older and everyone there seems really nice. I don't hang out on Pillowfort much but I love the vibe.

I also love the fediverse/mastodon for this! I'm not sure if there are any instances for the kind of topic this forum is for, but there are a TON of instances!

just so you know: I'm severely autistic, so a lot of the time I don't get social cues, may be unintentionally blunt, unclear in my language, etc. I also have memory loss so I forget things a lot.

Have a lovely day!

I recently found nikki.top which is SUPER indie. But it has a embed code for your post, and any custom css you edit actually edits the iframe from your embed code. (I mention this because there's no tooltips and so it took me a minute to realize how this worked)

i was looking at this a little bit and was curious, is it basically like status.cafe, except the iframe widget can be put to show x amount of "posts" ?

to OP, there's also status.cafe obviously, which is just a place to post a random thought/update I guess? that you can add to your website for example. I came across someone explaining how to get like, an "archive" of posts from status.cafe on your site (incase you want to list like, the last 5 or something - but I cant find it again lol)

blips and owler. both of them look and work like an ooooold twitter. didn't try them myself though.

status.cafe (symbols limit) works too, and also there's midnight.pub (no symbols limit), which i love the most.

I use Pillowfort and Dreamwidth too, mainly just so I can post my art there (and my site embeds my Dreamwidth RSS to use as its blog), I should explore those more, having a smaller place to just see what others post and to chat seems like a breath of fresh air honestly. Though I've actually been on PF since the beta back in 2020, I remember paying $5 for an account, since that was around the time Deviantart did the whole Eclipse update so was looking for other places to post art.

i've been using spacehey for about a year and a half now, ui wise it's pretty much a one to one myspace clone and to be fair there are a lot of inactive users but once you obtain some friends it becomes a very fun way to have a community imo, you basically can make temporary bulletins that are visible to your friends list only which are very good for silly shitposting and interacting with friends in general ^_^

The fediverse is the first thing coming into my mind thinking about indie social media.

Since the fediverse is essentially a whole mesh of independently owned servers. That makes it somewhat indie.

And its not limited to microblogging only. Weblogs (with the right plugins) can also federate with the fediverse, and others can interact with those posts. There are no hard limits on posts, media and whatsoever.

Its a free and open platform where everyone can participate in it.

Edit: i made an account over on nikki.top, and i really like the website. Its simple. I really like that.

I don't know how "indie" it is, but I think it's so obscure I haven't really seen anybody on this side of the internet talk about it!  :dog:

Recently I learnt about a platform called FriendProject that intentionally harks back to MySpace and has a customizeable profile/features with HTML & CSS. I don't know how the community is like, tho.

I might check out the site

Gotta need to learn how to code cuz I can't use some gifs and layouts from Spacehey as it is blocked in the UK (fuck Kier Starmer)
