hi all! i’m new to this forum so apologies for any mistakes  :4u:

lately i’ve been struggling with something i’ve dubbed “site block”, which is just webmaster-specific art block. i can imagine it’s something lots of you have either gone through before or currently are :,D i’ve had a neocities since 2021 but am giving it a massive overhaul and i’m finding it extremely difficult to just… sit down and work on it. my mind either goes blank or ventures elsewhere entirely and it’s quite frustrating! (adhd definitely doesn’t help either LOL :drat:)

i’m curious of a few things - have you dealt with this before? if so, what are some ways you’ve found to help it?

i’ll list a few of mine:
• sketching up rough concepts for pages - helps break down my ideas in more manageable chunks
• adding to my site’s pinterest board - gets me in the webcrafting mood
• browsing w3schools - refreshing my coding knowledge helps make executing my ideas feel less daunting

thanks so much! o7

Art block is such an annoying thing to deal with, you'll never know when it will go away, and you get anxious if you're going to stay like this forever...

But luckily, art block (or site block) is temporary, and I always find a way to get out of it, which is letting myself rest for a while, then look at my own art or site with a pair of fresh eyes. Some way I'll find cool ideas to add to my site.

One good thing about indie websites is that they are generally slow-paced, you aren't rushed to update the websites. It's a comfortable environment where I can work on my website in my own pace.

this is super true! i think the constant exposure to endless streams of information online can throw us in a fast-paced state of mind, so this is a great thing to remember. it does help a lot to just slow down and remember you don’t have to be creating all the time… if anything breaks are necessary for the creative process :o)

(we also live in a world that looks down upon rest which definitely contributes to this burnout HAHA)

I've only recently got into web building, since a few months ago to be exact. I've used enough CSS to scope out  what I need would be able to do in order to get this started. However, my ambition is is greater than my skill set.

Because of this realization, I have only the start page of my neocities that I started a month ago and never went back to working on (Mostly because I have not time or energy anymore, but that's besides the point) giving me my own site block.

I think the solution would be to lower my goals and standards so I can make it more achievable. but I don't think that would be true to myself if I were to do that. ://

is this unique to myself, anyone else having this issue?

To be honest the best way to tackle this is to try to learn, do your best, and fail upwards. You can edit and change your site as much as you want so reach for the sky and try to learn to do that thing you really want. Even if it comes out badly you can edit it and improve on it more and more as your skill increases. Try not to be discouraged by failure either because it's part of the learning process and will be super worth it once you get things more where you want it.

For me I did kind of have site block/burnout and honestly I just took a break for a while. It's nice knowing I can always come back to it when I'm ready so there's much less stress. It also helps me to look at things that inspire me. So looking at other sites helps a lot. Luckily there's no shortage of awesome sites on the indie web!!!  :transport:

thank you! i guess i see failure as a dead end, even though, realistically it's not. that's just the thing about me that i guess i'll work on this year. i will take your advice and reach for the stars even despite my skill level not being that high! <33
