my suggestion for the wiki: add favicons to replace the default external link icon when linking to sites within the melonland project. here's some css that should do the trick! :melon:

Code
.dokuwiki a[href^="https://melonland"] {
  background-image: url("https://melonland.net/images/favicon/favicon.ico");
}
.dokuwiki a[href^="https://forum.melonland"] {
  background-image: url("https://forum.melonland.net/favicon.ico");
}
.dokuwiki a[href^="https://everyone.melonland"] {
  background-image: url("https://everyone.melonland.net/favicon.ico");
}
.dokuwiki a[href^="https://pad.melonland"] {
  background-image: url("https://pad.melonland.net/favicon.ico");
}
.dokuwiki a[href^="https://letters.melonland"] {
  background-image: url("https://letters.melonland.net/images/favicon.ico");
}
.dokuwiki a[href^="https://melonking"] {
  background-image: url("https://melonking.net/favicon.ico");
}
.dokuwiki a[href^="https://thoughts.melonking"] {
  background-image: url("https://thoughts.melonking.net/favicon.ico");
}
edit: added thoughts.melonking (maybe that's all of them?)

I've got a wiki page change I was considering making, but don't know if it'd be welcome/too much like "self promotion"?

What does the wiki say?

https://wiki.melonland.net/rss_guide says:

Quote

The BBC's news feeds have become increasingly... not-great... in recent years (I say this as somebody who loves the BBC and pays for an annual TV license even though I watch exactly one broadcast television programme each year!). Often the feed contains items that are distinctly non-news content like advertisements for the BBC's podcasts, TV programmes, and apps. And increasingly the feed contains duplicate items: they've connected the way that the feeds are generated to what's showing on the front page, which means that if a news story gets "bumped" back to the front page (the content are the same, but they change the GUID) it can appear in your feed reader multiple times, which is annoying.

But there's a better option.

What I want to change

I think it should say something like:

Quote

I've been running "alternative" BBC News feeds since 2019: I originally started because I wanted to filter-out the sports news, but since then I've had loads of feedback from people and expanded it. The site's open-source and just runs as a GitHub Pages static site generator every ~20 minutes.

Is that kind of change cool?

Is that kind of change:

  • 🥺 Not okay: The page exists only to explain RSS feeds, not to help people find them; and/or this is too much like self-promotion,
  • 👍 Okayish: But the change should be made by somebody who's Not You, Dan, or
  • 🎉 Exactly the kind of thing we benefit from as a community: Woohoo! I'll get it changed!
(Sorry if it's a dumb question; I'm relatively new here!)

That's super cool! (might even be worth making a web proj thread for if you wanna discuss it) - community/open projects are definitely not self promotion, self promotion is like (buy my book about 15 ways to make google your uncle, or hi guys subscribe to my YT channel I review fried eggs every week bye :tongue:)

The only time Id push back against someone promoting an indie community project is when its the kinda person who makes a project then turns it off a month later without telling anyone :drat: (You've already shown your not that!)

Your filter is really cool. I wish there was something like this for every news/media site out there. It is something that is benefiting other people so I wouldn't consider it self promotion in your case.

I was asking myself the same question. Even after Melooon encouraged me to add a link to one of my articles about good webdesign practices. I just feel insecure about where to place it on the wiki and if a link to it is enough or if I should write more about my view on good practices and publish it on the wiki itself. I'm not sure if I will find the time to do so.

ATM everything feels so time consuming and the construction sites in my rl are exhausting too, to say the least.

This would be the correct spot, there are a few personal guides linked already so you'd be in fine company :cheerR: https://wiki.melonland.net/community_web_guides

Everything I've written is open source, can be hosted for free on GitHub Pages, and should be reasonably adaptable to other sites.

It sounds like you've got a lot on right now, but if you want to fork it and adapt it to some other news sites, any time you like, go for it! Alternatively, I'd be open to pull requests that "add" some other news sites to mine; that's cool too.

Alright @ Melooon, I will do when I have some spare time.

I don't have any experience with ruby yet but maybe I will try to fork and adapt your code to suit my needs one day. I already like the syntax very much. Thanks for offering to add other sites.

++ for the license you chose!

hey! I'm trying to edit the swatch time page on the wiki to include a new line in "How can I use swatch time in my life?" and i've encountered some issues...

when i tried simply editing one segment of the page with the edit for that specific segment, my entire page ended up looking like this, everything but the 'code snippets' segment had dissapeared?

I then tried to take the approach of simply ending the whole page for the change I wanted to make, and while that didnt ruin everything as badly as my previous attempt did, it still ended up ruining the clock at the top of the page...

how would i be able to modify the page without ruining it at all? :drat: :pc:

That page uses a hacky script that injects the swatch clock into a placeholder when the page loads, if anything changes about the placeholder it bugs out :drat:

I dunno why it was injecting code while you were editing though.. that's super weird! ANYWAY, I just removed the clock; your prob the 15th person to complain about that page being buggy, so its prob just better without it!
