Do yo Role Play?

I've been a Table Top Role Player for 30ish years, and as much as I love being around the table with all that awesome spontaneous energy, I actually prefer forum role playing, otherwise known as PbP (Play by Post).  I really like how I can have a recorded history of everything that happens in the game, and that I'm never really put on the spot.  I can take my time, and I don't have to pre-arrange a coordinated time to show up... just whenever is convenient.

Anyway, do you enjoy written forms of role playing?

oh my gosh, i LOVED pbp roleplaying as a kid!!! it was pretty much my only hobby for a while. partially because of the advantages you mentioned--being asynchronous meant i could post a reply at night and then not have to share another until after school.

all the sites i once used have since gone offline. where do you find pbp now, if you don't mind my asking? :0

I've been doing PbP and TTRPG roleplaying for a fair while now, closing on around 20 years for tabletop and around 10 for PbP. Though my forum based RPing is definitely slowing down a ton, I've been trying to find good places to try it out but I just found none unfortunately... I've also been dabbling in solo TTRPGs, specifically Cyberpunk.

You may ask, how is it different from just writing? Well, it's a mix of that and playing the game. You have a table with a lot of random events you can roll to get a fairly general image of what happens, and you string it together with your own plot and make up something fun while engaging with the mechanics and kinda dealing with what happens. It's very fun, but I lack motivation to do long-form stuff with it unfortunately. :(

I was going to write: "How do you actually play it, is that not super slow?"  But then I recalled I play correspondence chess, and find it generally more enjoyable than regular games!

Recently I discovered "solo rpgs".  It is an interesting mixture of normal RPGing and "oracles" (tables, dice, and similar to know what you are going to do next).  I was not interested at first but then tried it during a long ride on a train and it really works.

I actually met my husband through PBP roleplay! And, not only do we still do it to this day, but it's also how I ended up on my current path to becoming an author! Needless to say, PBP roleplay has a very special place in my heart.

I'd love to do it more frequently with others, but I haven't been on the online scene for a while. The last forum I was really into shut down :(

i LOVE roleplaying!! i grew up minecraft rping, so PBP has been a semi-constant thing in my life. tbh, i have been wanting to get more into traditional ttrpgs with an in-person group, since i feel like my real-life improv and rp skills have diminished. but!! my partner recently made her very first character, and i have been thinking of DMing for friends for a while, so who knows!! maybe i'll get to do it soon :D
