Bookmarks!!  :seal:

The suremost way to make sure you don't loose a cool site you visited ever again! ...until you forget to check your bookmarks  :drat: Or they get lost since you've been on a bookmarking spree  :drat:  :drat:  Or you change PCs and you haven't used those newfangled "Firefox Pockets" or what-have-you  :drat:

Sure, bookmarks are a great idea, but perhaps it's time to go a little beyond just clicking on the star and hoping for the best.

How do you organize your bookmarks? How do you keep them in sight? The latter is especially important to me because my brain sure is the "out of sight out of mind" kind  :ohdear: Maybe that's why I'm working on my art resources page on the regular lately... maybe I should do that with other aspects, such as HTML coding...  :wizard: wait, wasn't hoarding links a bad thing during the 90's-00's? Something about websites becoming "link farms" and nothing more?  :trash:

to be honest i'm hoping someone comes up with a solution to this issue as well. i have so many sites in my bookmarks that i just never check that often, and now ive neglected going and searching for cool sites too.

a solution off the top of my head (and a solution im not actually sure is possible rn) is perhaps either relying on the 'follow' feature on neocities and nekoweb to watch when ppl update their sites (which obviosuly comes with the issue of not every site being hosted on those platforms) or maybe creating an RSS feed of some sort?

but thats just for sites that update, otherwise i genuinely have no idea

A solution I personally use is organizing my bookmarks in a personal Discord server only I have access to. (I'm sure this could work for Matrix or Revolt servers, too, or any other Discord alternative.)

In that server, I have channels dedicated to certain niches of bookmarks. Some of them include (but are not limited to):

  • Fanart I like
  • Things I'd like to buy
  • Resources for mental health
  • Kaomoji
  • Art references (a separate one for poses, art tips, fashion, color palettes...)
  • Piracy resources (as a bit) (in Minecraft)

I only keep the things I actually regularly go to in my pinned top bar. That includes a UNIX timestamp generator for my site's RSS feed, cobalt.tools, ArtShield, etc.

This probably won't work for everyone (I'm sure not everyone is on Discord or a Discord-alike, and this doesn't really help with the "out of sight, out of mind" issue), but it's helped a LOT for me and my issue of hoarding (and subsequently losing) bookmarks!

I personally keep a text file on my desktop with every website I visit's url and name. This text file is opened in a program called vim so that I can then go to the url by copying it and opening the website in my browser inside of a pane of vim. I sort of have trouble using the internet outside of vim because this bookmarks sheet is so expansive and useful for me. This works with firefox and any other browser too. Not just a text based one like Lynx.

I actually think that vim is a very under rated bookmark manager.

Interesting. I used to use a text document of links before I converted it to https://abslimeware.neocities.org/helpdump later on.

This is a picture of all of my bookmark folders. I try and keep everything in a folder. pieceofthepie is my own website, so I keep that out just for a little extra ease of access. The Other Bookmarks have sites that I may be in the progress of checking out, or a reference for a show I'm in the middle of watching and will likely delete later. Some folders have sub-folders. Such as Videos; it has a 'Watch Later' folder since I do not login to YouTube on this device.

I do tend to forget to look at the Cool Sites I have saved. As some other members mentioned on this post, it would probably be best to get an RSS feed for these sites so I can be notified whenever new content is added. I should also add an RSS feed to my own website. One more thing I use RSS for is YouTube 'subscriptions'; as I mentioned that I do not login on my computer -- this is a way for me to get notified when a Channel uploads a new video.

You can try tools like notion that you can then add description and tags or categories to later search for specific topics later. Maybe even add a column for date added and some other data, maybe star rating etc. It can be very useful.

P.S. as I write this I think I should be using this method myself.

For the longest time I barely ever used bookmarks and just kept tabs for websites I frequented open forever, but sometime last year/early this year (I kinda don't remember), I decided to switch to bookmarks, for a lot of the reasons that have already been mentioned in here!

Something I really like is that Firefox has an option to display your bookmarks in a sidebar as well as in a bookmark bar on the top of the window. So I have the bookmarks for websites that I most frequent (and folders, since I put those first) in the top bookmark bar, and then on the bookmark sidebar I can see more bookmarks + links

Here's what I have on the main bookmark bar:

Something I've noticed, though, is that many of these sites, my first instinct is to just type in the URL instead of using the bookmark! And, on top of that, some of my most frequented websites (I am unfortunately all too often watching stuff on YouTube too much, for instance) aren't bookmarked. Having sites I most want to go back to often on the main bar does seem useful, but it almost paradoxically can result in those bookmarks being used less, because I just have them open more often than not! IDK, trying to be more purposeful with my internet usage, but it can be tough!  :dive:

I second the use of an RSS feed and some kind of organized dump spot (website page or, in my case presently, a Google Doc) for the bulk of resources, cool websites, and things like that which can become a LOT as we can all agree. If I had to guess I'd say I have maybe 60 bookmarks on my browser? It feels like a lot less but as I was counting I realized I have quite a few; they're just so well-organized that it's completely manageable! :] Here's how I keep them organized:
  • Life Admin (email inboxes, calendar, banking, Google Drive)
  • Personal (library home, SpaceHey, folder for websurfing like forums and bored button, folder for resources with subfolders for webcraft and literature)
  • Professional (unemployed rn so mostly links to job applications; obviously this would be v different for everyone lol. E.g. my work email used to be in this folder)
  • Misc (folder for search engines, folder for 'maybe buy later' links, random word generator, weather link, etc)

You end up with four easy to navigate folders that are simple enough to not look overwhelming but sorted into enough categories to actually be functional. Of course this depends on how many bookmarks you have/want to keep, but in combination with using an RSS (I use Feedr) and saving more hyperspecific links in other places, I've found this to be EXTREMELY helpful and my personal email folders, local laptop storage, and Google Drive are actually organized the same way to keep things consistent. Highly recommend this strat and pls do let me know if anybody decides to utilize it!

My mindset on hoarding/saving everything changed when I read this post about hearing music in your dreams: You likely won't remember in the morning, so you might as well just enjoy it in the moment rather than stress about losing the moment. I've also applied this to website bookmarks: Sometimes I won't remember the website or forget to save it and that's okay, I enjoyed it for that moment. :wizard:

That said, if I really want to save a bookmark for whatever reason I now do the following. Since I do most of my reading/browsing on the phone, if I find something nice I will paste the URL in a file on UpNote (which is synced between my phone and PC). On PC, I decide whether I save the URL in my private bookmarks, put it on the links page on my site, or let go of it anyways. Recently I've added descriptions to my Links page so it's clearer (to both myself and the reader) why I saved a certain website. With this I feel it's easier to just share anything I like on there, including blogposts I find interesting.

As for private bookmarks, I used to have a TOOOON that I never looked at. There's still some stuff there from 7+ years ago... Nowadays I only store things there that I know I need regularly. My folders are:
  • Personal (with a Pokémon and CANAAN subfolder)
  • To watch
  • Neocities

And like others said, I make good use of RSS by following any and all sites I find interesting through that.
