I was wondering what Code Hosting / Version Control services do people on the forum use? I was considering signing up for GitHub, but of course want to go a little less commercial. (I also just read a post saying they use your code to train AI??? Not sure if that's true).

My first thought was Source Forge as it is a bit era-appropriate for those of us seeking the OldNet feeling.

What do you use? Do you just go with GitHub, or an instance/self-hosted Gitea/GitLab -- Do you use an alternative like Bitbucket or kick it back old-school with Source Forge?

I self-host forgejo which is based on Gitea but modified and maintained by the people at codeberg, besides that it’s also used for https://git.gay so it’s pretty nice

I don't use any.  :omg:

I never understood the need if I was the only one using the code, and I save local changes when I make big changes for a while and do regular computer backups. Most of my changes are tested on the live server so I would have to upload it too often for it to be worth it for my own site.

I use github, mostly just because it automatically updates my neocities when I push to it which is very nice.

I used NotABug. Its a free software (and free to use) alternative to Github. Usually, I code on my local machine and release the code as a .zip; for one of my more recent projects, I thought it might create more response to use a Git-Style platform - this didn't worked out, but NotABug worked out well, and so I might stick to it for future releases anyway.

I am most familiar with GitLab. It’s a pretty awesome service that’s leagues better than GitHub.

I think the one golden rule though is that you should have multiple places to back up and store your code. This is keeping in line with POSSE. My plan is to have a repo on both GitLab and GitHub and use the CI/CD features in GitLab to push my site on Neocities.

My GitHub profile has way more stuff on it though, simply because there’s way more people on it.
