My website uses about ~100MB. And thats for a blog (flatpress), linkportal (shaarli), and my forum (phpBB). Including the content, style, images.
And my webspace has 20GB of storage.

On the new site, its now reading as 17.82 MiB, and 99% of that is images I believe (similar to the prev person, I also run a webcomic).

My local copy is 4.6 MB. Pictures are only 432 KB (i guess it wouldn't hurt to make sure they're compressed. Maybe tomorrow). A lot of the site's size is the 3 copies of Moby Dick that add up to 3.9 MB (to demonstrate a compression technique i came up with). According to Neocities, the live version of my site is 4.54 MB. It's mostly plain HTML and i try to keep it light.

Mine is 211 MB, 97% of that is roughly two years of both compressed and uncompressed artwork. Could be smaller, but the site and page content itself is pretty lean so performance impact could be worse. :wizard:

I optimise my artwork when I export it as part of my workflow now. :)

I just checked, and... mine looks like about 27GB. 🤯

But that's got approaching three decades of blogging, podcasts, galleries, vlogging (those videos take up plenty of space!), etc. I try to keep the pages themselves pretty lean: e.g. if you go to the homepage, the initial 17KB load will give you all the HTML, CSS, and JS you could possibly need; then you'll get about the same again in fonts, and then finally about 300KB of images. So each individual page is pretty lightweight.

But yeah, that cruft adds up over time. Also, I've definitely got images rescaled to sizes I don't use any longer that I ought to tidy up.

Holy crap. I would be confused as to how you can have that much stuff on a webpage but 26 years worth of stuff justifies it.

Have you tried using different formats like webp, avif, or jpeg. Maybe even gif images. That'll dramatically reduce file size.

Have you tried using different formats like webp, avif, or jpeg. Maybe even gif images. That'll dramatically reduce file size.

I'm not so concerned about the storage space; storage is cheap. I care about the bandwidth use though: gotta keep the pages lean! So I upload whatever I like and have tools that resize and reformat on the server. So I might e.g. upload a huge JPEG but I end up with some sensible-sized JPEG, WebP etc. files. I'm not doing AVIF yet but I will in future. But I have the server keep the full-size files too: that's almost certainly a big part of the space usage!

I do content-negotiation, though. E.g. if I upload a PNG and your web browser has an `Accepts:` header with `image/webp` in it then you'll get served the (smaller) WebP version of it; if your browser doesn't support WebP you'll get the PNG version. That optimises for size while still supporting the widest diversity of browsers.

But almost certainly the biggest content is videos. There's 11 videos over 100Mb, a further 136 over 10Mb... those largest-147 videos alone contribute about 11GB to my entire site size!

Anyway, the tl;dr is I don't mind the total storage space - space is cheap, and I want to keep the master files somewhere! - so long as I can keep the bandwidth usage efficient!

After a while, I reached around 100 Mo. Can't say exactly why but for me it's a milestone I'd like to delay as much as possible for the moment. So I went back to the oldest pages of my website and I just optimized most of the pictures and took off a very heavy wallpaper (5 Mo!)

It is now sitting at 77.73 Mo after the whole reduction. It's not increasing exponentially since I now resize and compress pictures before uploading them. I know I will reach tha 100 Mo limit at some point but I'd like to stay under as long as possible.

I know I could save a good chunk from deleting the blinkies and gifs but it's too cool to pass on ! My ultimate dream is to never cross 700 Mo of data so it can be put on a CD-ROM and distributed/saved on a physical media. (Yes I know USB exists but I grew up with movies fitting on a CD ROM with a bad quality, it's living rent free in my memory !)

Probably the smallest functional site I run is my 18-month-old plain text only blog, at textplain.blog The front page weighs in at only 841 bytes right now... and most pages are barely bigger than that.

No JS, no CSS... not even any HTML. The only content that's not plain text is the RSS feed (which is, by necessity, XML)!

I'm thinking someday I can implement a guestbook by exploiting the Link: header to make Webmentions work. But today is not that day.

mine is almost 3MB. granted, it's a fairly basic & new(ly revamped) site & the only big images are at the bottom of my toybox, but i'm sure not having one million billion jillion libraries helps. that isn't a problem with Our websites (unless we've got libraries downloadin' greg in here & i didn't know) but it is for mainstream ones lol
but yeah i feel like for most of us the biggest Bloat is gonna be image files. maybe i should scale down some of my particularly gluttonous ones... as in you can actually see them load, which is probably not normal to be concerned about even...

Mine is around over ~1GB. It's an interactive website the bulk of its content being a multimedia webcomic, and I suspect the animated music videos bump up the file size quite a bit.
Besides the webcomic, there are the blog/gallery/games/forum/etc. so I'm not really surprised at how much storage it takes up.

my personal site runs 135MB (103MB of which is art!)

And even with that I size my images down so that they're "web resolution" not full size. I just want people to see my art, not be able to steal a high quality copy of it LOL...

I also made thumbnails for the gallery pages so they load that much faster. Lots of little bitty images instead of lots of medium sized images. It does mean more files and more storage, but it's worth it I think.

I run a Neocities website and it's almost 11 MB. I mostly use small png images and little gifs to keep things lightweight! Never compressed any image as I think I dont need to do it since they're very small

Here my website if you want to take a look! (it's still work in progress, if you don't like the homepage I agree with you, I'm working on it!)

At this moment (just a main site-hub, here is no gallery and blog yet) it's only 6.77 Mb. It'll increase way more, sure, but I will keep compressing stuff
I recommend PNGoo(windows version of pngquant), it's compress pretty good and quality still great
