Hello! I'm Cryptic, I'm a college student from the US, studying Library Sciences. I want to eventually pursue a masters degree in Archival Studies, and become an archivist, as archival is one of my biggest passions. It preserves the history and culture of a time, something I'm very passionate about.
One of the things that caused me to become interested in archival, is actually linked to the old web. I grew up with old websites, and I was heartbroken when they started disappearing, being replaced by new, sleek pages, that were utterly devoid of personality and customization. It felt like they were built more to just get you addicted to scrolling through, with no value to the content or humanity.
It inspired me to start archiving the old websites that still remained, and eventually I discovered Neocities which introduced me to the Webmaster community. I want to archive newer old-web style content as well, and I've started my own site (still a massive WIP though).
I also enjoy reading, knitting and crochet, video games, and cosplaying! I'm a huge nerd
Anyways, I'm excited to be here and it's nice to meet y'all!

Hello and welcome, Cryptic!

When I was much younger, I once had too considered to become a librarian. But things turned out otherwise.
A friend of mine works as an librarian in France; he recently told me that the profession is now much more about bringing the population in touch with books, organizing events and visits with book-mobiles at retirement-houses and schools, and so on - a thing that was - at least here in Germany - not even at the horizon when I considered entering this field. Back then, everybody told me that it would be a solitary job where you mainly interact with books by cataloguing them :).
Do you know how the situation is in the US in this regard?

The librarian profession is currently much more than just cataloging books, definitely! There's (sadly) not much interest in books among my generation and younger which means to keep attracting people, libraries definitely have to do more to spark interest. My local library organizes a lot of events, as well as has many more things than just books to check out (we have a tool library, seeds, video games, movies, CDs, and a lot more). A lot of the job too is answering people's questions, and helping provide resources! I find it interesting to see how libraries have evolved over time honestly, when I was younger the role was definitely seen as how you describe.

It's definitely so useful  I've used it so many times for things like putting together furniture in my own personal home library. Unfortunately a lot of libraries don't have enough funding, so things like those are situated around areas with big populations
