In my few years of webcrafting, I've seen many webrings. They look very cool and help web surfers encounter new sites! I have some questions for you guys:

  • How many webrings is too many? Or do you join every webring you find cool?
  • Do you put your webring widgets in your index page, or some other page?
  • Would you alter the structure/css of the widget? If so, how much?
  • How do you present the widgets in the page? For example, do you put them in a small box with a scrollbar that shows a few widgets at once, a marquee, or just a box that shows the entire list of widgets?

I'm curious how you guys do with the webrings and its widgets, for me:
  • When I first started my website, I entered any webring that felt suitable. But as time goes on, my sidebar allocated for webrings became too cramped, and I don't really want to squish it more. But today, I decided to move them to my bookmarks page. And that leads to my second question.
  • I actually preferred to put the widgets in the index page if possible. However, due to the amount of webring widgets I have and their sizes, it felt awkward having a short main content and a long sidebar filled with widgets. I actually tried to shrink the widgets using CSS, but at some point it would be too small and the sidebar is still cramped.
  • And when it comes to altering the widget with css, I often try to compress it while keeping its appearance recognizable. There are some webring widgets which don't have much styling (like it's just text and links), in that case I would add a bit of styling based off the homepage styling.
  • I forgot where I've read it, but I remember someone saying it isn't that great to hide a button/widget behind the hidden section of a scrollbar box or marquee, as it makes a link less accessible than others. Because of that, I try to make every button and widget easy to find, in my ability at least

1. i'm not in too many webrings but i dont think there would be "too many" unless all of them have very large widgets? decently-sized per-line webrings are awesome and easy to list, but ones with really big boxes or images make it feel a lot more cluttered a lot faster...

2. i have my webrings on my index page! i love the graphics for them and it felt most convenient to put those outlinks on the front page, but i might end up reformatting my site to have plain html/no javascript sidebar, because the webrings don't appear in a javascript sidebar </3 either that or making a dedicated outlinks page with cliques webrings neighbors etc. still in the early stages so we'll see....

3. i try not to mess with the structure of the widgets given because i am not yet smart enough to feel confident doing that  :ha:

4. as of now my webrings are in a scrollbox because it felt too cluttered/intrusive to have them scattered all over the front page without much organization or coherence! at least like this they're presented in a nice list, but it goes back to my earlier point of considering making a dedicated page to show them off & link away from the site.

as a note, this is all just subjective.

i put all my webrings on my index page. that way, it sort of signals what my website will be about as well as anything else displayed on the page. on my website, i have a scrollbox with all of the webrings and listings in. that way, it isn't a huge list! i know people who make them into a marquee as well, but i don't like that one so much because it makes it harder to click on the one you want.

i also don't usually edit the webring style, but for some that don't automatically scale to fit the box, i will have to! you can see it on my site now - the nature camp webring is a bit finicky. :ok: i like the webrings to look pretty, so i will try to make them pretty!

as for what i join, i join things that connect me with others. that's what the purpose of a webring is, after all - at least to me! for example, i love final fantasy, and i am going to talk about it a lot, make shrines for it, etc. so i figured joining ff listings/webrings would be very appropriate. i always take a look through some of the members before i join as well.

How many webrings is too many? Or do you join every webring you find cool?
in my case, i lean more towards the latter! i can get picky sometimes for one reason or another.

Do you put your webring widgets in your index page, or some other page?
index page, in a little section on the side.

Would you alter the structure/css of the widget? If so, how much?
if it's not needed, then no. the most i do otherwise is resize the widget if it's too small or not displaying correctly, i never do full overhauls or anything like that. to me, it kind of feels disrespectful in the sense that someone else bothered to make their widget all pretty/look a certain way and here i am "scribbling" all over it

How do you present the widgets in the page? For example, do you put them in a small box with a scrollbar that shows a few widgets at once, a marquee, or just a box that shows the entire list of widgets?
scrolling box with few widgets at once! i'm pretty sure my webring list will only continue to grow and showing them all at once may feel overwhelming to others. it functions like a fake popup box where you click/tap a button on my index page and a div with all of my widgets comes up. i don't know how accessibility friendly that is, but it's been working as intended so far!

Interesting topic!

How many webrings is too many? Or do you join every webring you find cool?
I don't think there are too many, but I prefer to join webrings I genuinely care about and are a big part of my interests & hobbies. Excluded are a few I joined in the early months of my site's existence. You know, the more general ones for people with a website in some way. I still see new ones popping up, but don't join them. I focus on more specific ones.

Do you put your webring widgets in your index page, or some other page? // How do you present the widgets in the page?
inside the footer of my homepage. I used to move them around, including throwing them in a pop-up window but I always disliked it. Webrings are often a bit "ugly", as in, they vary in style and sizes and barely fit anywhere, especially if you collect several of them. I figured the footer is the best location for it and I'm pretty happy with it atm. Put them in neat lill boxes that adjust themselves based on the one with the biggest height, that way its less chaotic and random looking.

Would you alter the structure/css of the widget? If so, how much?
Yes!, but minimal. For example, color & size. I don't want to get rid of the original design too much, as they're part of the webring for me.

I still need approval from OCverse, the owner is busy during holidays, but here's my current widget area
