Hey!

The name's Kafei, I'm a 24 years old physics student from France. I've been looking for a place that offers a more personal, chaotic experience, that most of the mainstream internet does not offer anymore, and I found this forum so here I am!

I used to have a lot of fun designing small web pages and apps back when I was in middle school and high school, but kinda did not have the time anymore, so I'm hoping this environment will give me some motivation to pick up that hobby again as well as spark some creativity.

Otherwise I'm really into music, I've been playing the piano for most of my life and I also produce electronic music, but I'm also very interested in music instruments making, acoustics, signal processing... Anything that is related one way or another to music I will dig passionately!

Anyway, I'm excited to meet you guys! Byyyeeee!

welcome to the forum!! :dog: you should totally share some of your music on here. I don't do much in the realm of producing music, but I sure love listening to it!!

I hope you enjoy your time here, and I certainly hope the forum gives you some inspiration for other web-related projects as well. Very nice to meet you ^^

Hello!

signal processing...

Was music one of the reasons for you to study physics? Was that... fun... to learn, that it's all just differential equations (always has been)?

Sorry for asking questions about real life, but what it's like to study physics here in France? I am not from the EU, and I'm really curious to compare the methodology...

I was already into physics independantly from my taste for music, but after goofing off for a few years after high school I ended up finding a physics program with an acoustics flavour. So yea my interest for music got me into that specific program, and it's actually very fun yea! Being able to relate all the theory I learn to some practical things I intuitively know in a musical context is really fulfilling. One specific example about signal processing was how my mind was blown when I learnt about using convolution to change a signal, that's litteraly what you do when you add effects like reverb in a digital audio workstation!

The master's program I'm in is not very typical of what you'd usually do in France. I don't have a lot of classes (like maybe 10hrs/week while most people I know in other programs have like 25 to 30hrs), it's all very project-based. It's a lot about reading papers, replicating the results and exploring a bit, going beyond with some simulations etc... and writing a report with a layout similar to a scientific paper. Each student also has a "mentor" who is a researcher in one specific subject (fortunately mine is specialised in the physics of music instruments!). It's really awesome! But yea I suppose it's not the typical experience master's student get in France.

Wow, so you are exploring and publishing in the field you like, with less classes, with practical and project-based curriculum, with a mentor in the field you really enjoy... That is so cool! I wish I had this option for a master's program!  :omg:

I was mind-blown in a similar way, when there were computer graphics classes at my university. Learning finally, how videogames I play and enjoy work felt like a revelation. Maybe, computer graphics inspired me to finally start doing something and enter this place...
