I am not super active on discord but I am definitely a server collector!

I love the idea of going somewhere online and talking to people but it always seems hard to join in on conversations. Someone here said it feels like going to a party where you don't know anyone and I totally agree.

It's also hard because I just forget I have it. Even servers I have with friends and people I know in real life seem to get forgotten about within a couple of weeks!

This probably says more about me than it does about discord though! lol  :pc:  :wizard:  :wizard:  :wizard:

Kind of mixed at this point in time: like it because it's a bit better than Reddit when it comes to talking to local folks in my area (a bit better). Also hate the idea of it being commercialized (not the right word ig...) and recently got under fire for having AI scraping around on servers. Dangit guys.

I have at least two I've been active on that's not the said local group and there are times where I get stomped out in one but the other one - is the complete opposite. Have a few servers I joined because favorite game/genre but never active enough. One was for the book series I like and other than that, can't find a decent group that is for that specific series aside from Tumblr...

It can be a mixed bag for me so to speak. :dunno:

Admittedly I'm writing this after uh...a really awful discord experience but also my experiences with the platform have been horrible all around. People before have already detailed how awful it is when it comes to storing information. I would love it for Game Devs to Stop Using Discord as their main information repository and/or place they post news because I don't want to join your discord! I write meta and it's horrid just horrid when I realize that the info I need is buried in a DISCORD SERVER, and I'd love it if people just made wikis or faqs or Literally Anything Else Other Than Discord to Index Information.

I have a more neutral-positive experience with Discord but holy shit, I feel this. When I was at a convention 2 months ago, I playtested this game that was really interesting! I asked if it was on itch.io or Steam, and the devs told me it's still being worked on and this game booth is currently the only way to play... And then I was given a QR code to their Discord server for future updates.

And it's like, why? I joined the server but I really want more people to know about this game. But it's all locked in a Discord server unless you go to an event where you can test it in person...

Completely agree with that sentiment. I do like Discord a lot as far as chat servers go, but I'm in hardware mod and development, and it's so frustrating to have necessary files or guides to a piece of tech locked in a discord server. A lot of times it's pinned messages that someone happened to share or a chain of messages that you need to use the search function for. Not intuitive at all!

I'm not a fan. I never know how to find a server and I'm bad at keeping up with what's going on in one if I ever do join any, so I just get bored/uncomfortable and leave. I still have a discord but I only use it for video calls with groups of irl friends, not for any kind of online communities. I'd rather have groupchats with friends and use forums, tumblr, and email for communicating online. Discord is overwhelming in a way that a forum isn't and I like having the space to send longer messages.

I second that statement. I had to do the same for Pokemon Crystal Clear and my goodness it's a nice QoL hack of Crystal but the only issue that bugs me - is the way to download the patch works when I grabbed my patch. It could've changed dramatically since then but not again!

Same can be said for images nowadays but I don't recommend Imgur for several personal reasons. I honestly recommend places like PostImg and/or FileGarden for image hosting. The latter can even host music files if you use places that support it. ToyHouse was one I used which is why I utilize it.

Even though I use it a bit more than I used to in the past (prior to the previous post I made in this exact topic, I'm starting to agree with that statement as well. I don't have much of any IRL friends so I'm stuck with a local server of Reddit members of the local group there. Part of me wants to get more connections but at the same time - not on that exact platform.

I even considered looking into a coding server that is open to new members but went against the idea because personally - I don't need an excuse to do so... I use the IRC service I utilize via the discord server but I had considered going to the actual IRC itself instead. Complete newbie to the whole tech itself because it was before my time with the Internet so I have little to no experience with IRC. Same can be said for both Matrix and XMPP
