how to make a gallery page?

hello, one of the things i plan to add to my website is an art gallery. my planned functionality is to have all of the images small enough to fit a decent amount on the page (you can scroll to further images), and then when you click on a picture it either shows it larger on the page or just redirects to the image file so you can see it larger either way. i just don't know where exactly to start with making something like this since i have zero experience coding anything like this. is it javascript??? i would appreciate any advice or resources on making something like this!

i'm no good with javascript, but i CAN offer a solution through this cool widget by dimden that makes images you upload clickable...
