Honestly, purchasing stuff. If you didn't live in a major city you just couldn't get certain things. Buying stuff online was hard and often expensive. I've been tinkering with old/cheap tech lately and a lot of problems can be fixed if you just buy the correct cable or go to the library to 3D print a stand or case for a few bucks. Back then if you got a new game for your birthday and it came with "X99923 Videocard Encoding Error" you were out of luck.
