Hi every body,

I am helping create an archive to document the history of a building / community space. It's been a kind of punk house for decades and is likely going to be gentrified soon, so we are putting a call out to try and capture as much of its history as possible. We're collecting media of all types, and will be storing all digital files on a series of hard drives with backups in multiple locations.

We don't want to use cloud storage in an ongoing way for data-sovereignty reasons, but we do need to pick some sort of cloud storage or file transfer service for people to give us files to add to the archive. I'm expecting mostly photos, but could also be some video files. We don't need heaps of storage space cause we'll be downloading files as we receive them.

WE WANT:  :4u:

  • Something very accessible to users who may not be very tech savvy
  • Ideally drag-and-drop interface

WE DON'T WANT:  :skull:

  • To use big corps / the big 5 (google, amazon, microsoft...)
  • Users to have to download any software - should be accessible from browser
  • It to cost tooooo much! But it can cost a bit.

Examples:

Digital Pigeon is a great file transfer service I used to use when I worked in the film industry, but is geared toward (and priced for) massive file sizes, which we don't need for this project.

I've started making a very basic website for the archive - much of the info is still placeholder, but in case anyone is interested it's here: Museum of Garrett Street.

Really appreciate any suggestions.

xoxo

You could use Archive.org. Users can create an account and upload files under a specific collection.
