Hello everyone!  This is my first ever post on this forum I think, so I hope I'm doing it right lol.

I've been working on a bunch of fun sci-fi miniatures out of a few boxes. I've been kitbashing (using pre-existing parts of several kits in an unintended way, cutting em up, sculpting extra details, etc) and just generally painting up some fun little sci-fi mercenary/military looking bad guys for my crew of ragtag randoms to fight against in a campaign for the Tabletop game Five Parsecs from Home. These are 28mm scale!

I've also made a big bad evil guy figure, though it is not kitbashed at all. It's a resin model, and you really don't want to breathe in shavings of that material, so I was a bit hesitant:

Aaaaand the good guys, this ain't all of them but here are my personal favorites! They're a very ramshackle group that has no real idea what it's doing, but they are having fun. Mostly. Aside from being shot at occasionally on a desert planet at the edge of the galaxy.

And as for a WIP, I've grabbed this fantasy snake man miniature set (May I add that 99% of the parts I used for everything were from various models by North Star Military Figures and the rest are probably from Games Workshop) and I tried to make them feel a bit more futuristic:

I ain't done with em yet, I need to resculpt the gun's handle and clean up the model a bit more. But to me this snake person feels like an explorer more than anything else... maybe I can give them a fun little hat and paint them up like some Indiana Jones type character??

These look so cool!  :omg: I had heard the phrase kitbashing before but I never really knew what it entailed, this looks like such a dope hobby! I'm curious: how do you go about adding material if you want to add something completely original to a model? Do you glue on a small plastic chunk then sculpt it down to the shape you want? Or do you use pre-existing model pieces and modify them to fit?

I support putting the Indiana Jones fedora on the snake person :3

Firstly, tysm! And as for adding details, it's kind of a mix of everything. It depends on what I want to add.

Let's say I want to put an extra little holster for a tool or a weapon on a model, or change a major aspect like a whole leg or arm. For those things, stuff that is usually more intricate to sculpt, I prefer to see what parts I have and mostly use sculpting material to fill in gaps and make the joins look natural after cutting the parts I need and modifying the joins. But if I want to add smaller, simpler details or stuff that's easier to sculpt like a cape or a hood, it's usually easy enough to mix up a bunch of Greenstuff (that's the sculpting medium I use) and do it using that.

For example, the dog alien guy in the middle of the first picture uses a lot of parts. The body and legs are from a different kit than the arms, and the shoulder pads are from different kits each, etc etc. There, I mostly used greenstuff to sculpt the connections in the shoulders or the head, making the left shoulder guard appear more bulky and as such make him stand out as more of a slightly intimidating figure.

Or, if you take the guy with a metallic arm from the third picture, his cape is entirely sculpted by me! It's kind of hard to see, but I even gave its edges some fun texture via putting on texture paint on it (paint mixed with sand to give it a chunky, earth-like texture, you can see it on the bases) to make it appear like some funky sci-fi camo.
