British people (especially those who live in Oxford) I need your help!!!

okay so I just recently graduated high school and I don't know exactly what career I'm going to study and I don't want to just rot in my house until I figure something out but fortunately for me my dad knows some people in a travel agency and offered me to pay for a semester where I could travel to any country of my choice to study english (since that's my second language) in a school that was associated with that travel agency and during that time I would get some help picking a college mayor so I could decide on my career when I came back home, I obviously accepted and now I'm oficially gonna live in Oxford from September 2026 to February 2027!     

I'm really excited about this and I'm trying to make a list of places I would like to visit while I'm there so I wanted to ask y'all, what's a cool place that you would recommend me to visit? and when I say a cool place I'm talking about literally anywhere that you belive is worth my time (and preferably that it would make for a fun blog post), it does not matter if it's a super impressive historical marvel or your favorite mall or thrift store, I do not care I want to visit EVERYTHING and make the most out of my time there

If you asked for something more especific that I'd like to see then I guess I would be biased towards anything that I can interact with and play games on like an arcade, mini-golf course, bowling alley, escape room but like I said I want to visit as many things as possible so even if the place you have in mind is nothing like what I listed here then I don't care I want to visit it too, I want to take pictures, I want to learn about history, I want to eat food, I want to make friends, I want to do everything that's in my power and I don't want to waste a single opportunity, the more the merrier 

I'd also to go to a museum but one of those museums that are focused on one very specific theme, I already have the national museum of computing and Novelty Automation (a museum of funny arcade machines) but I want MORE I love it when museums get very oddly specific themes

I also really like theatre (especially musicals) so if you know any cool theatres then I'm all ears

And finally I'm a big nerd both a science nerd (especifically a space nerd but I like all kinds of science I just adore space the most) and a videogame/anime/comics nerd so anywhere I can nerd out about any of those specific things would make my day

And it doesn't have to be JUST places from Oxford since I already asked and we're gonna be allowed to go outside the city on the trains during weekends and I have especifically been told that there are some trips to London planned

So for context: I live within cycling distance of Oxford. I first moved to Oxford in around 2010; I later spent about 8 years working for the University of Oxford (in the cultural sector: I got to do lots of things with making exhibitions work for the various museums, libraries, galleries etc. of the University. Nowadays I live a little way out, half-way to the nearby town of Witney, but I'm still clearly "connected" to Oxford: I've visited the city twice just this weekend (on Friday night I was at the New Theatre for a production of Waitress, then yesterday I was out celebrating Family Day with a meal at Cosmo).

Anyway: good on you for taking this exciting leap. Let's see if I can help with the actual question:

Oxford is a compact, highly-walkable city with excellent public transport so getting around is a breeze. It's steeped in arts and culture and there's some excellent academic-adjacent opportunities. Some of my favourite things to point out are:

- the architecture: take a walking tour if that's your jam, or just dig up the WikiTravel page and look around for yourself: a thousand years of history are on display. Be sure to check out the Tower of the Five Orders in the Old Bodleian Quad, the Radcliffe Camera, Old Tom at Christ Church, the winding alleys around The Turf, the many old churches, etc. Most of this stuff is free to visit, although the college quads often aren't.

- the parks: University Parks, Christ Church Meadow, Port Meadow, Cutteslowe Park, South Park etc. are all beautiful, especially in the summer. If that's your jam, South Park hosts an epic fireworks display for 5 November each year, which sounds like it's overlapped by your visit.

- the museums: all of the University's museums (the Ashmolean, the Bodleian Libraries, the Botanic Garden & Arboretum, the History of Science Museum, the Museum of Natural History and the Pitt Rivers Museum) are all excellent and their exhibition spaces are free/cheap to visit. I'm a personal fan of the History of Science Museum: their collection of orreries (mechanical depictions of the solar system) over the centuries is excellent: you can see the evolution of epicycles even as the heliocentric model begun to take over from the earlier geocentric one. The lesser-known cultural spots are good too: I really enjoy the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, although their opening days for the public are rare. And the privately-run Story Museum, while designed for children, is adorable and delightful if you've a childish heart and like a good book.

- the activities: anybody who spends long enough in Oxford ought to have a go at driving a punt - a pole-barge - down the Thames. You can rent them by the hour: take a picnic and a friend and go a-meandering down the river (and try not to fall in!). We're a small city but we've got plenty of all the usual activities you'd expect in a British city too: there's a few good escape rooms (try the ones atop the Westgate Centre or, if you don't mind the bus ride, out at the Kassam Stadium), an absolutely bonkers eccentric mini-golf place (under the Westgate), some good theatres, lots of sports clubs, etc.

- other stuff: anime nerd? check out Blackwells Comic Store on Broad Street; like food? check out the world food market at Gloucester Green several times a week, or see who's in the Covered Market; I can see you're already thinking about trips further afield: London's very easy to get to by train (fast) or bus (cheap); the Cotswolds is pretty easy in the opposite direction - some other places, despite being close, can be harder: the Museum of Computing History (out towards Milton Keynes) is excellent and quite achievable, though. Out my way there's some good archeology to be done: I live around the corner from a ~4,000-year-old standing stone circle, for example!
