I'm currently working on a site for Internet Art and it has e-mail, Github, & Google as login options. Considering other options. I've stumbled across:

https://indieauth.com/

https://indielogin.com/

https://indieweb.org/IndieAuth

though I've failed to login because my artist homepage is still hosted on InfinityFree, which  apparently blocks crawl attempts very strictly.

I'm planning to eventually migrate my artist homepage to a Docker-container on my Hetzner VPS, but before I start prioritizing that, I'd like to check with you: Does anyone here even use IndieLogin or IndieAuth? The search function here shows 0 mentions of either. If it hasn't seen much adoption, I'll put it off for now.

I've never heard of it before and I've never seen any site offering it; however since your on this forum, I will draw your attention to mAuth that's offered here, and the Passport Helper library that goes along with it

Thank you, Melon! Barring a sea of incoming replies singing the praises thereof, I'll forget about IndieAuth/Login for now. MAuth api sounds fantastic though, and I will definitely try it out.

Yes! I love Indieauth and use it everywhere I can. It's super clever, because so long as you have a domain name (or subdomain) that's all yours, it acts as your identity. You can run the authentication yourself if you like (I do) or you can outsource it to Indielogin (which means you use it without any server-side code of your own).

It's super cool.

I'll go ahead and represent a third perspective here: I've heard of indieauth, but I haven't bothered to try implementing it yet! Mostly because I am still using a static site host, and I don't have a comment box or anything like that on my site (yet - I'm switching to NFS to host my site soon which means I can start tinkering with PHP!).

I like much of the the ethos of IndieWeb projects but it feels very, I dunno, traditionalist microblogger for me. Like when I see someone using IndieAuth i think it's cool, but it also makes me feel like that person is likely way into using federation for everything and Mastadon and... that's not really the direction I like to think. I don't want to have artifacts of social media floating around my online presence, if that makes sense?

But that's just me and I'm a proud weirdo!  :cheerR:

I will draw your attention to mAuth that's offered here, and the Passport Helper library that goes along with it
Melon I do intend to make use of your mauth when i get around to messing with PHP! I think the Melonland community is lovely and having users here be more interactive on my site seems fun :3

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

I started implementing IndieLogin but have decided against it. It doesn't even give the website the user's e-mail address so they would still have to set it to get essential notifications, and at that point, they might as well just use e-mail registration. Anyway, in addition to e-mail I'll have Melonland, Github, and Google as registration options, which is probably enough.
