I deleted my Reddit account a while ago, i forget exactly why. For a while i still read the site sometimes with the old view, until they killed that by making you sign in to use it. That's what finally motivated me to find an alternative frontend (LibReddit), which is what we use now. Until even more people leave it'll continue to be a useful resource. But i don't feel too bad about reading it, since i have adblock and i won't recommend the site to people (without an alternative frontend) so i'm not doing them any favors.

maybe this isn't news to anyone, but i have noticed that i could follow 100+ subreddits, mostly computer science and gaming themed, and in the feed, all i will see is political posts from the same 10-15 political subreddits or posts from say, a local city themed subreddit you dont live near and never visited the subreddit for,  with a juicy controversial post.

in my experience, the algorithm is so broken (in favour of capturing user attention) that i basically never see posts from 80% of the subreddits i follow and post in, regardless of how large and active a subreddit is. i joined a subreddit because the topic interests me, i want to see more of it. i dont want to have my feed choked with political posts or posts about some facebook spat between a business and customers in a city i have never been to, clear on the other side of the country or sometimes in another country.

This. This is the exact experience I have had with Reddit and the obvious reason why I left.
I get my real life information from other places and I want to keep certain apps "clean" from such content (especially ones based on "infinite scrolling" dashboards) in order to avoid doomscrolling, fatigue, bad thoughts, all that jazz that comes from information overload.

So my Reddit was supposed to show cute pics of hamsters, sushi, and design inspiration/references for the decades and aesthetics I'm interested to. I never once even used it to comment or even like the posts: if I found something that I could use later, I'd just simply download and save the pic.

I kept getting bombarded with posts from channels that I had never interacted with to the point that my feed had become unrecognizable and my own followed channels were nowhere to be seen. I tried silencing subreddits for a while but I soon realized that feature straight up doesn't work, and I had no use for a site that I'd go on just to try wipe off unwanted content that would show up angain anyway. Funniest thing is that I kept getting american news, even local ones, but I live on the other side of the ocean. If at least it'd have shown italian news! But no.
Uninstalled the app form my phone, never opened the link again from my comp, and I've been way better ever since.

The only thing I'm happy of is that this terrible experience has made me approach RSS more and more. I'm just sad that I can't use RSS to finally follow the subreddits I wanted without the extra info pollution, because for some reason not every reader shows Reddit (as far as I understand??) and not every subreddit has RSS. For example I could easily find r/80s but not r/80sdesign, which I was most interested in. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong, I 'unno!
