What are you Writing?

What are some of your WIPS right now? Right now I'm working on an eldritch horror story about human nature that takes place in a pizza shop (that definitely isn't loosely based off of somewhere I used to work lol). It's been fun to work with the themes and write that out in my style, so that the two play together really obviously. I'm excited that I don't plan for it to be super long either, I always pressure myself to write things longer than I would actually prefer, yadda yadda something about shorter stories being less impressive in the professional space. Would love to see what people are working on and the inspirations behind them :) 

TODAY I FINISHED a rough draft for a short story. The genre is pulp action adventure and its a setting similar to Firefly with heavy inspirations from the video games Megaman Legends and Starsector.

Its about a girl who disowned her family of criminal robot merchants because she considers them to be slavers. She returns home after receiving a plea for help from her uncle who she has a conflicted history with. She helps save a robot that looks just like a human from her family.

The rough draft is ~5000 words and its on my website, but you shall never find it because I have it hidden until the story is ready to share. 

Other than that, I wrote this short article expounding upon my opinions on my least favorite Byzantine Emperor - JUSTINIAN

i've been working on a series of a fanfic since about 2017 i believe. it's kinda cringe and self-indulgent, hehehe but who cares. i write it only for myself anyway

currently working on a muti-part story that ties with several different characters together in a cute little bow. the dream is to make it into an animated series one day when I finish my other main projects, but that's a long way off. the concept of the story revolves around how agony and hate change people as a concept and how hate can ruin your life sometimes. this manifests as "abilities", and the ability to create and devour worlds as the main "ability"(idk what I want to call it yet). essentially hate can turn you into a madoka-magica style monster that devours worlds to survive if it consumes you! idk if I want to marry myself to the concept of agony and hate quite yet, I'm not sure if everyone would agree with my outlook on it or the ideas behind the story, so while it's still just a silly little idea in my head i want to play with different concepts and ideas while I bide my time. feel free to send your thoughts, ideas, criticisms my way!

I've been on a massive Medieval history kick, so I really enjoyed your article about Justinian There's such a huge amount of history from that time about very powerful women stepping in and absolutely killing it in politics (sometimes literally). Whatever your feelings about Theodora, she was very good at what she did.

To add to your point about her shock and horror about Justinian's terrible handling of Belisarius, wasn't the main reason for the tension there because he would have been perfectly positioned to stage a coup and take over Rome for himself? If I remember correctly, that's what the opposing side, in fact, expected him to do, but he remained loyal to Constantinople and declared victory for the empire instead.

Anyways, not to derail the thread too much. I wish I had my own (fiction) writing to offer, but I've hated my stories since I was little. I do have some that I've cooked up in draft form, but I don't know if I will ever grow the confidence to share them on my website. Maybe one day...

Yes that's my understanding. Btw, Have you ever listened to the metal album which describes Belisarius's life? I very much enjoyed it.

I can relate to your issues with confidence about writing. I have similarity dealt with that. I once threw away a 30,000 word half-novel because I had decided to edit it without finishing it. When it comes to writing, I've found that its ok for a work to be bad on the first draft. In fact, I would like to share my terrible first draft of a story I am working on - just to show you that a first draft does not have to be coherant, well written ,or any of that.

I'm planning out the outline for the second draft as soon as I'm finished typing this messege. It won't always be as bad as this lol. All that out of the way, here is the super hidden rough draft of my short story project. Tbh the only reason that it is on my website at all, even in its highly hidden form, is because I was using it to test my html formatting.

Aw sick!! I get the one character struggle, it means the environment and the MC really have to play together, which isn't always easy, especially with space being mostly 'empty.' Good luck with that!! Where are you going to be posting it if you don't mind me asking? :))

Omg  im  so  sorry  for  leaving  you  hanging  for  basically  a  year!!! Uhmmm  I'd  like  to  post  it  but  I'm  not  totally  sure  where,  in  all  honesty   life's  gotten  so  hectic  lately  I've  basically  completely  abandoned  my  writing  until  recently.  I'll  see  what  happens

Well, here it is. It's the second chapter in a story my friends are helping to push me to write. Chapter 1 has some very strong violence and chapter 2 has some bad language. There is a list of trigger warnings featured on this page.

Chapter 1 has already been shown but I included it for context.

Chapter 2 has been uploaded and sent out on my mailing list. Just as an aside, have you guys heard about the mailing lists? I think we should all make our own mailing lists because so many of us have web pages and art we are proud of and this can be used as a way to update people that want to see what we create. Right here on this thread, I have two hopes.

• I hope that this thread eventually becomes HUGE from so many people sharing their writing. I love the long threads on Melonland.

I've always been bothered by how the droids in Star Wars are basically slaves, except that they are programmed to enjoy their slavery. It reminds me of how in real life a lot of people fall in love with their oppressors, and blame themselves while experiencing the worst kind of abuse. I might be pouring too much of my emotion into this project, and it might be making it all a bit melodramatic. But thats okay imo because melodrama is fun and I want to FINISH SOMETHING!

Currently I'm working on an OC x Canon one shot (that's haunted my drafts for much too long xD), and slowly but surely (emphasis on SLOWLY) chugging through the remaining chapters of my OC's side story!

Lately I've been really enjoying posting little short stuff to my Dreamwidth, and that's been helping with building up my inspo to do the larger stuff!! Hope everyone is able to find some inspo for their writing, too!! :D

Been working on editing the next part of Excursion in Dragonia. For the most part aside from removing stuff like dice rolls and statistic stuff, I've been pruning some unnecessary details or stuff that contradicts or doesn't make sense with later events. Kind of a boring process and it does leave me with a lot of thoughts of 'what was I smoking'? I know a good chunk of this was played and written out when things weren't great for my life at the time so I'm giving myself a pass. Still, I didn't exactly think some of this through.

I'm currently working on the finishing touches of my first game's story! It's about a virtual desktop anime assistant and a murder mystery :)

Alongside that, I'm writing a script for my visual novel about a vengeful spirit coming back to try and kill the MC, who she died trying to kill 5 years before the main story. There's a lot of cool ghost lore and also a really heart-breaking romance involved (not with the vengeful ghost)

I post entries onto my diary project just about every day. I have an essay I'm working on right now about how I quit nicotine and I'm trying to build up a repository of essays so that I can start posting them biweekly. Fingers crossed!

just this weekend, i finalized the script for my first-ever produced play, so that's very exciting! it premieres next weekend and honestly i'm still a little in shock @_@ super exciting though and further than i ever thought i'd get with like, anything, especially at this point in my life.
it's a story really close to my heart--it's about an autistic woman who works at a queer cafe, and her struggles with her identity, and a magical sensory room she can withdraw into at will. she gets stuck in there with her least favourite coworker, and they realize they actually have a lot in common!
but with that done, i'm kinda... not sure what to write next! people keep asking that, and it's like... i could write another play, or a chapbook, or a zine, or an essay collection... or maybe i'll just go to grad school haha. who knows!!
