anyone who has been on the internet since about 2016, you probably are aware of a shut down short form content app, vine, or at least familiar with some creators on the site. :ok:  there's been recent discussion on how the ex twitter ceo, Jack Dorsey, is bringing back vine, only with a new name, no ai, and THOUSANDS OF ARCHIVED VIDEOS!! :ozwomp:
what are your thoughts on the revival? do you think this is wonderful news and the newer generations will be able to experience true, non ai generated content, or do you think the past should stay in the past? :ohdear:  OR, secret 3rd option, do you think its going to become ai driven anyway? :omg:

I was super excited when I first heard about it, because I liked Vine. But later on I heard that RabbelLabs, the company actually making the app, also trains AI models. So the whole "No AI" thing is likely so they have a clean-slate to be able to train their AI with  :notgood:

that sucks
the no AI thing made me have a bit of hope for the app. but eh it probably would've worsened attention spans either way, since most short form content has been this past decade

The fact that it's almost certainly going to be used primarily for training AI models is disappointing but not a surprise. Everything on the web gets scraped nowadays, but there's something extra annoying about sites that directly funnel into that for profit.

I have ethical concerns about AI that are more complex than "all generative AI is theft," but I do find the idea of someone directly profiting from content I produce without my explicit consent to be incredibly sleazy, especially under a capitalist system that places the highest value on being able to claim "ownership" of an idea. Modern social media is functionally denying everyone who uses it from ever "owning" that content, and this is just another example of that.

I dont think anyone needs a "vine revival" because most videos on there were just dumb BS and nothing really worth bringing back I feel like. Theres probably a better alternative than whatever jack dorsey has up his sleeve.
Since his company does AI model training, i would rather diVine NOT get popular. Its obviously a front to get people to make videos to train his AI with. I dont know why ai is even still so relevant. it shouldve went irrelevant like 2 years ago but everybody keeps trying to shove it in stuff for no reason despite the fact it's losing stock value.
