help moderating guestbook

Something rlly scary happened to me yesterday where I got doxxed and spammed relentlessly-- including on my cbox.

I just ended up having to take the cbox down for now, but I'm not rlly sure how to clean up all the obscene messages or how to prevent raids from being as effective in the future.

Additionally, some of the spammers somehow got around cbox's name protection and impersonated me, sending humiliating messages.

Maybe I should give up on having a guestbook/ find an alternative that'd be a little safer.

ok so first off I would say don't feel pressured to have a guest book plenty of people don't have one bc they allow ppl to send feedback through email or they just rely on the social features that are built into Neocities and the Nekoweb guest books are dinosaurs from a time when email was to slow and unreliable to work well and when people didn't have the hosts that we have today and they aren't necessary for feedback

That being said if you still want one then maybe try something like this it would be a lot harder for trolls to abuse your guest book if you decideded to not use a third party that's all the advice I have sorry if it wasn't any good and I hope everything turns out right

i see, yeah there r lots of other ways to reach me, ig i just liked the idea of having a space where browsers could showcase themselves a little. but that might be more effort than its worth, sadly.

maybe i can come up w something different, but in the meantime, maybe i just forgo the chatbox....

I've seen people who have guestbooks where the posts don't go live until the webmaster approves them. That can strongly de-incentivize someone to not keep leaving troll messages. The other thing is you can't react outwardly in a frustrated manner and address all these people and how you feel about them because this will just make someone want to do it more.

I've looked at your stuff a little bit, and all the "I took this down because you guys" and "Please stop spamming her page" from your friends. Remove all that stuff.

I don't know if its true but I heard once if a chicken is profusely bleeding, that the other chickens will peck the chicken to death. That's kind of how the Internet is. If people smell blood, they will go for it. The only thing you can do is to stop bleeding.

It's a fucked up world, I know. But that's how it is. Stop bleeding. You'll be ok.

Most likely after whoever these people are stop caring about you, you can turn it back on.

good catch! I edited the webpage to hopefully give more of a "moving forwards" vibe rather than a scolding of past transgressions. hopefully that deprives them of a little more attention.
