So on Monday I had a dumb late-nite conversation with some friends and I came up with a project idea. I won't go into detail on what it is, because I want it to be a surprise for this forum when and if I finish it-I think some people here'll get a real kick out of it. Suffice to say it's simultaneously really dumb, kind-of useful, and mostly just an excuse to reference some old movies; the true Badgersaurus style, at this point.
But anyway.
I figured the best way to go about making it would be to make a modified, modular version of those drag-and-drop dress-up games/pages that can be downloaded and used as a local 'page' on your computer, so you can fiddle with the files to your liking. You know, the ones with the columns of draggable clothing/parts that you move with the cursor onto a canvas/blank space to make your own outfit/creature/robot/whatever.
The easiest way for me to learn with coding (or anything, really) is a combination of basic tutorials on the general usage of the tools and tearing apart the 'inspect element' of whatever I'm trying to do. The problem is I don't have any references of these drag-and-drop 'games' on-hand.
I know I've seen them sometimes on people's personal websites, and on various older sites and archives of them. I figure some people here probably know of a few, so... if you do, drop a link, please! I'm curious to see how they're put together, if they usually use JS or something else, etc.
Thank you in advance!

Well, this just SCREAMS @Necrosia to me! I'm sure they have some thoughts to share as they have created some dollmakers themselves.

The only resource I have is Dollz Mania! (https://dollzmania.neocities.org/dollmakers/) You'll have to do some digging through the pages as some of them might be broken as they are mostly archived, but that's half of the fun to me, hahaha.

There's a small webring for those. Take a look at https://pixelcuties.club/members.php

You're so lucky! Once you've got the basics HTML5 and Canvas are not difficult to use to drag and drop objects around the screen. BananaCoding on YouTube has some nice turorials.

Dependng on what access you have, Konva looks nice, but there's plenty of turorials using plain JavaScript around.

(thanks for the ping @Lyonid <3 )

It's futile, all dollmaker links lead to me, I am even on that webring.

On a more serious note, if you want to share with me on private your ideas we can come up with a solution but what @brisray mentioned looks like a good place to start as well! There is a lot of 'game maker' programs that can do dollmakers just fine if you are a bit creative, I aside from coding from scratch I also personally used this one for some projects: https://www.stencyl.com/

edit:
here's actually what you asked, a drag n drop example that is not from a dead site

If you're looking to do this on the web, the script I used for mine is Ninique's dollmaker script from here:
http://minidollz.ninique.net/code/dollmaker.html

I did have to update it a bit, since the libraries it references are old. If you'd like to see mine with the changes I made, it's here:
https://www.thefrugalgamer.net/dollmaker/

I'm interested to see what you come up with, whether it's web based or not!

Aw, thank you! I don't promote it much, probably because I did it a while ago and sometimes forget about it, lol.

Thank you everyone for the resources! These are all super helpful. Once I finish my summer classes I'm gonna start working on this.
