I was wondering if there are any tips on how to find books or writing that interests you. I have very specific niche tastes which exist as floating ideas in my brain, but unfortunately don't see them used often and would like to submerge myself in other people's thoughts to hopefully round these ideas out.

A couple years ago I tried to get into reading more, but went through over a hundred popularly recommended books in fantasy, fiction, etc. and did not enjoy them at all, resulting in me having to put them down after a few pages/a chapter or two...

So what is your process like?

Mostly lurking niche communities. Honestly combing through them. I also search up solutions for everyday problems I have too. I find cool resources and people that way. Especially when it's like "Woah I had the same idea." I subscribe and read newsletters. Aggregators like Hacker News and Panda (Design Panda? Something like that) work too.

Pay attention to everything, and make notes when I think of them, before they're lost.

So far just this morning, for example, I've been thinking about writing about:

  • Computer sounds: after leaving a comment in another thread right here on Melonland, I've realised that I've written several times about being attached to the sounds that computers make - I want to write something from these thoughts, but I'm not sure if it's a short story or a blog post yet
  • Oxfordshire's fog: there's none other quite like it that I've found - in the winter, especially, it clings to the hedgerows around the edges of the fields long into the day after the rest of it has burned off; it's curious and beautiful and I want to share it with the world
  • The Devil's Quoits: there's a neolithic stone circle near where I live that I've written and vlogged about a little, but since helping the village school run trips there I've been refining how I talk about it and how to make stories about the place engaging and exciting ('cos that helps when talking to 7/8-year olds!) and now I want to give those things a wider audience

Will I ever get around to any of those? Maybe, maybe not! But they came to me on a short walk this morning and now I've noted them in Obsidian so I can revisit them. But inspiration is fleeting, and if I hadn't written them down I can guarantee that by tomorrow - maybe by this afternoon - those ideas would have been lost forever.
