Subject title sums it up best I think, but to further explain: are there specific hobbies that you watched others do and/or seem to grow interested in to the point of wanting to try it hands on - only to back out because of financial setbacks it would bring? Even with the constant uncertainty of what's been going on in the world, you still want that bit of happy distraction to get yourself away from the dread.

For me, it's either making plushies again and/or figurine crafting. For the former, it's simple to explain easily. I have had my eyes on a ton of stuffed animals - but needed to get out some of them before getting new ones... Most of them are going to be the usual suspects of pokemon plush that are closer to their in-game sizes. Other plushes though might be of original characters. I have the tools, albeit slightly aged and needs replacing. Would be enough to get me to use the sewing machine.

The latter is a bit more complicated. I think the interest came from one of those Japanese styled doll figurines...

Image explains what they look like. Very similar to these but I was wanting to make one that is close to what the persona looks like. I'm a big Japanese wannabe for even saying that bit... :ohdear:
I mean a person could dream though, right?

Horse riding horse riding HORSE RIDING  :ozwomp: I'm the kind of "horse girl" who wasn't actually raised in a family with horses and got all her appreciation from books and TV stories about them. However, I'd love to try the real thing and learn how to raise and take care of these beautiful creatures. Sometimes I joke that I wouldn't have half of my problems if I was raised along with horses (I don't know how true that statement is).

Also, custom console cases  :dog: I know a retro game business in my city that can do them! But it's still a bit far out of reach for me  :tnt:

YEAHH. I am not exactly a horsegirl, but I am very drawn to an hypothetical life on the countryside, or just closer to that. I dream of having horses and maybe some other large farm animals like pigs [as pets].

Another thing I would love to get into if I had infinite time And money for that is costume/prop making. I have talked about that in another thread, but I often think how amazing it would be to make those intricate monster costumes with built in puppet/animatronic features. Like the stuff you see in older horror or fantasy or scifi movies. I want to make and dress up as a xenomorph Xþ

Horse riding definitely looks fun! though I'd probably only get into it if someone else did the taking care of the horse part haha

anyway, I've always wanted to get into collecting ball jointed dolls! buying lots of parts for them, dressing them up, posing them and taking pictures, etc. A lot of them are so pretty, but also so expensive :tnt:

I'd love to keep silly old vintage vehicles  There's a festival called the Slowth Festival dedicated to the most tiny, ridiculous, slow, inefficient and fun cars of the early 20th century and I feel like it would be my kind of speed

Though knowing me, if I was really into it I'd want to start making silly cars from scratch rather than just restoring them and that could get out of control very fast!

I like the idea of being a light aircraft pilot too, and in a real fantasy I'd love to fly bi-planes, but I think in reality I'm not sure I'd really enjoy it. Still the idea of being up in the clouds with no cabin and no borders and anywhere you can go sounds very dreamy.

If money was truly no issue, Id build my own cross country railway and operate a free passenger steam train on it and have my own cabin I could use as my apartment/office!  :omg:

Horses have always terrified me, I don't like the idea of my safety relying on the brain of a creature I cannot ever hope to understand - maybe thats true for humans too though  :drat:

tons of different types of crafts:
  • wood and metal working - i really want to anodize jewelry
  • knitting + crochet + sewing in general
  • making pins and wire wrapping jewelry
  • bleach dying clothes!
  • pottery

i think there's some sort of studio that has memberships to use their tools for the community near me, hoping i can check it out sometime and see if i can try these out without putting a bunch of money down on materials.

If money wasnt a issue i would probably be collecting Hi-Fi equipment.
Also i would use that equipment to create mixtapes of my favorite music, so i can listen to it when i'm on the go.

Other thing, i would probably be a fursuit maker.

Probably something like vintage tech collecting... or hardware design... or like getting back into ham radio?

Horses are pretty fun, my mom has some so I've gotten to ride a couple times.

Was hoping to get this in before the forum closed for Monday as per usual, but I got distracted badly and wasn't able to do so...

Other thing, i would probably be a fursuit maker.

cosplay. especially fursuits.. id have so many... like, its easy to get a 15 dollar cosplay off some site but then there's the fursuits. id get a kasane teto bat fursuit for sureee

I couldn't comment on the horseback riding ones since I have nothing to add aside from that's cool and wishing those folks the best of luck on those endeavors. I just couldn't see myself do it... Like driving a car, I feel like it's super stimulating to the point of feeling overwhelmed. :ohdear:

Since these were talking about fursuits: my goodness yes! I can't say I have been experienced in the suiting stuff myself as the closest to them I had made myself were kemonomimi parts. Still haven't decided on whether I want a partial or full body, but if I was financially healthy I'd be okay with the former - especially with sensory issues that could occur with the full body ones. I had recently got a fursona and a Pokemon self as well that I could use for the basis on the suit so there's that...

Although I am leaning towards the Pokesona a bit though as the idea of dancing around as a Lucario does sound fun! :ha:

tons of different types of crafts:

i think there's some sort of studio that has memberships to use their tools for the community near me, hoping i can check it out sometime and see if i can try these out without putting a bunch of money down on materials.

I had worked some on metalcrafting and jewelry when I still did college classes but between not liking it as I had hoped and apparently being the victim of someone taking off with my classwork in progress I couldn't stay in there without being overwhelmed... Pin making sounds like a blast and honestly I wouldn't hesitate to see if your library has that sort of tools and materials to check out! Mine did so with some hobbies as well as some events where guests could make pins and various crafts for free. I know some do have a fee but it's more than likely to help cover the costs of the materials that most would use.

Mostly done some crochet and I ought to get back into that since it's more of a time issue than money... Done some various amounts of hand sewing but not full fledged using a machine since about early high school. Flunked that class badly but still enjoyed what I got out of the class. For the pottery, see if there are any local community colleges and/or art galleries nearby that offer guests to try out the wheels. Messing with clay is a bit messy but a whole lot of fun when I took the ceramics class in college (different university). I still have a few pieces I had made there I hold on to and would actually use. One I actually keep my necklaces and bracelets in.

honestly the first thing that comes to mind with these kinds of questions is simply more art supplies! it's not a new hobby but it's certainly one I'm held back at by funds (and space... space is also an issue)
as far as new hobbies go I'd really like to try my hand at making plushies! I really love plushies and my friends keep sending these videos of a guy making a life sized fluffy raptor plushie, which makes me so jealous... but then I look at the cost of fur and just the amount of trial and error I'd have to go through even with a pattern, and I lose my nerve. I'd so love to be good at that sort of thing though.
physical crafts in general, really. I've made clay sculptures for college and uni a few times and the price of supplies always makes my eyes water. I suck at it too so I end up feeling like the clay was worth more in its packaging than it is as a piece of art, lmao. I have a really lovely fridge magnet from a friend of a character of mine (and she's made larger sculptures too that are too large to ship, rahhhh) and I wishhh I could make something in return. physical crafts are just great
