I've heard a lot of people in general saying that screensavers are unnecessary nowadays, and I can't disagree, but I just think they're neat! I like having a screensaver of my "My Pictures" folder cycling through, so I can get reminded of all my favourite memories. :)

After reading this, I downloaded it for myself and installed it on my PC, so thanks for this! I didn't know there had been a Minecraft screensaver. Pro tip for anyone else since it took me a while to figure this out: unzip the file and then right-click the screen saver file and click "install".

Edit: literally right after posting this, I saw that this Web site here, which was open in a background tab for me, has its own screen saver when you let it idle for a while! I think that's super cool!!!

The kinda people who say screensavers are unnecessary are boring IMO, like yea sure it might not be practical but neither is setting a desktop background or changing your pfp.. It's just fun to have!

Mojang didn't advertise the screensaver that well, and it probably didn't help it was released with the april fools update. I only heard about it because someone mentioned it offhand.

Also, the "website screensaver" thing is very cute and i want to implement that now!!

I'd argue with the rise of AMOLED screens on computer monitors, laptop displays, and even televisions, screensavers are probably gonna be necessary again in the future, especially since OLEDs have the possibility of burning in. (I've only encountered one such case, though; I have seen a store demo of a smartwatch with the screen burnt in with a notification that stayed on too long!) Admittedly, the TVs are already there; if you use a Roku box or TV, I believe it has a screensaver you can activate. (Most other TV platforms just stuck with simple slideshows, though. Since XScreenSaver has an Android port, it might be fun to put that on Android/Google TVs...)

Anyways, on my Linux journeys, I'm kind of tempted to use XScreenSaver more. Just gotta actually install it! Outside Linux, I'm surprised no one here has mentioned After Dark, the classic screensaver collection that gave us the flying toasters. Apparently, someone made modded versions of the Windows builds that apparently still work on modern Windows, and I've felt compelled to install them on my (OLED screened) laptop, heh.

As for my past screensaver usage, there's something mesmerizing about that 3D maze one in Windows 95. There's just something about it... and I can't forget the starfield one also in W95! I also recall my sister had a waterfall landscape one, complete with sound. Don't remember what it was called, though.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned aquarium screensavers here yet! They were inescapable on both pc and mac at one point. I don't remember any specific ones but I know there were dozens around - I wonder if anyone has archived these somewhere? I'd be interested to see it...

Personally I also use the Apple screensaver that rotates through your iTunes album covers like @BlackMageGaming. I have a huge (10k+ songs) library and I make sure everything has an album cover, so it's a really nice way of viewing my collection and sometimes rediscovering things I haven't listened to in a while.
