Hiyall, I'm working on getting my first neocities site up an running. I've uploaded some files and they are working for the most part. Here is the link to my site: https://pieceofthepie.neocities.org/

I am having two issues at the moment, both work fine locally but not on the actual live website:
  • The text emoticons I have in the titles for each page are not displaying correctly. I got them from https://emojidb.org/
  • The image URL is not loading on my site. I can open it in a new tab and it loads as expected.

Can anyone help me fix these two issues?

I am also trying to get my site to give that 90s/Y2K vibe that a lot of other neocities sites have - Where should I start in getting my own site to look like this?

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Site looks nice so far! Regarding your issues,

  • It seems you've just copy-and-pasted emojis into your HTML, which doesn't work since the encoding for emojis is quite specific and most likely not what your markup is saving as. What you ought to do instead of just putting emojis is to find the emoji's Unicode decimal value like this: 𞉀 where the 123456 is the decimal value of that emoji. You can find those values here or on many other sites. For more on using emojis, https://www.w3schools.com/Html/html_emojis.asp.
  • I don't know which image you're referring to, but my guess is that you're hotlinking to it (i.e. making the source of the image the URL of an image on another site) and that the site you're sourcing it from has some strict referring policy against that. What you ought to do instead (if this is what you're doing) is to save the image and upload it to your own site, then source the image from your own domain. Along with solving this issue it's good practice in general, as hotlinking is first off often considered rude since it leeches off the other hoster's bandwidth, and if the site you're linking the image off of were to go down or just change their file layout, the image on your site would break. Hosting the image yourself guarantees stability and gives you a clear conscience.

Regarding style, just try out a lot of things and take inspiration from a lot of sites and mix and match until you find what you like.

Thank you for the suggestions here!! I was able to get both of my issues resolved with what you had mentioned!

If anyone goes on there to see, you may notice the viewer count and last-updated are not displaying. It appears that for New Accounts we cannot use a lot of features, unless you become a supporter. If anyone was trying to follow This Guide from Dannarchythen you may not be able to add this to your site.
