Hey there. I’m JINSBEK, I can’t remember exactly how I found MelonLand, but I’ve always loved Neocities, and I do miss forums. I was born in 1995, and grew up with Newgrounds, DeviantArt, Neopets, Lissa Explains It All. I’ve just finished the basic layout of my art website, jinsbek.art. So far, the index, About, first Journal page, and Gallery are usable: my Gallery is missing a lot of works, and most that are on there don’t have their dedicated pages ready yet (everything from Jeong-hwa and down are finished). My fiancée VioletHeaven has also joined MelonLand! She’s started working on her own website, too; it’s her first ever time, and I’m very proud of how quickly she’s picked up HTML and CSS.

My other interests include flip phones (I love my Fujitsu Arrows F-05G in burgundy and will post about it in the big flip phones thread later!), lost media archiving in general, and rehabbing baby squirrels. I think once I’m done getting my website squared away, I’ll get back to painting.

Nice to meet you all! <3

Welcome JINSBEK,

please tell me more about rehabbing squirrels .
Two years ago, we rescued a hedgehog when I visited my parents - but we brought him to a nursing station, as we didn't felt secure to do it ourself.

I was a long-term flipphone user (sporting an auld, shiny-red Samsung), but the available non-smart flip phones around here are all designed for seniors (extra-big-buttons, and so on), so I eventually went to use a CAT B26.

Aww! That was very sweet of you to take the hedgehog to an experienced rehab centre. As for rehabbing baby squirrels, it’s easier in certain ways than you might assume, and harder in other ways. I have a lot to say, so I’ve placed it under a spoiler below.
Spoiler
For example:

Feeding them when they’re fairly young is pretty easy: get a good puppy milk formula, and dilute it according to how dehydrated the baby is. Introducing to nuts with intact shells feels both very slow and surprisingly quick, because it takes a “long” time before you can start introducing them to solids such as easy fruits and deshelled nuts, but shortly thereafter they’ll soon start being able to handle nuts with the shells on, too. You have to wake up every two hours to feed them milk just like with a human baby, but on the other hand, they’re not nearly as helpless as a human baby at all. They’ll communicate with you when they want you to come pick them up, or if they’re alarm calling and trying to warn you of stranger-danger. I set up my apartment to offer a jungle gym appropriate for a baby squirrel, so they can practice all the climbing, jumping, and running across branches that they have to do when they become adults. You gradually introduce them to whatever park you’re going to release them into; baby squirrels aren’t very confident at climbing trees in the beginning, it’s pretty funny seeing how clumsy they are, though you also panic as a “parent” whenever your baby falls or looks like they’re about to fall. They play like kittens play with your hand, and they’ll wake you up in the middle of the night just to play-wrestle. When they’re scared, they love being carried around against your chest. It makes them feel very safe, and they get so affectionate afterwards.

In the end, though, a baby squirrel can never be a modern pet. Baby squirrels grow up into adult, competent squirrels that want to find and cache their own food, leap across tree boughs, and start their own families, they’re not like a dog which is perpetually dependent on you. They’re extremely intelligent and want to live adult squirrel lives and do squirrel things, and they do their best to get better with fine motor control skills, and demanding gymnastics. Surprisingly, you don’t have to potty-train them at all. Baby squirrels are smart enough to know not to pee and poop where they (and you!) sleep, play, and eat. If you pick them up and put them somewhere they don’t normally visit, they’ll assume that you want them to go potty there. Their droppings are dry pellets that are easy to clean up, and honestly, their pee has barely any scent and colour. I guess that’s super important for a prey animal that lives out in the open (versus a predatory dog or cat which wants to announce anything and everything with its piss).

Favourite foods are definitely a thing. Preferences for certain varieties of apple, for example—I agree that Sugarbee is superior to Honeycrisp—and for flavours of ice cream… No, I don’t suggest you feed a baby squirrel ice cream regularly. If it happens, though, be prepared to be surprised by what they prefer.

Oh, I hate all the modern flip phones that are sold in the US market now (except for the Nokia Barbie, which honestly looks great and has a lot of love put into it, but it’s not my aesthetic). They’re all yawningly boring to me, not very fun to look at or handle, and I don’t hear anyone raving about the sound design, which is extremely important to me. I have a Japanese flip phone running Android 4.4, but honestly, I don’t feel the need to use any apps on it other than the memo, and what I’m most happy about is how it looks, sounds, and feels. It’s my favourite timepiece to own to date. Yes, I use it mostly as a watch and alarm clock, since it turns out that’s the biggest reason I kept using my smartphone. I would look at the time, then unlock it…

Oh hey! Right, you’re into iPod modding, right? Nice to see you around! And I’m glad you liked her website, too. I think she’ll be surprised that people other than me are looking at it and enjoying it. It’ll make her day.

Nice to meet you too! Congrats on getting your fiancee into it, too!

Hey Caracalled! Jinsbek is right! It did make my day! Multiple days, in fact...! I'm so happy that other people are enjoying the website. P.S. You should click the crab in the bottom left for a WIP game journal page! It's meant to be an "open secret" for now.

I love your iPod modding stuff, too! I think it's really cool with what you can do to mod old tech these days.

Thanks a lot for the details and the pictures, both your dedication and commitment for the squirrels and your description about their behavior and nature are great to read! :)

Hello and welcome to the melonland forum !

I'm really interested by flip phones. I'm sort of addicted to my smart phone and I'd like to try a flip for a while. Any recommendations to get one in Europe ? No need for internet, just a plain basic flip phone with sms and perhaps bad quality pictures. That'd be lovely ! I'm going to monitor the thread you mentioned !
