A fix posted by Dan Q in the Liquid Crystal Cafe chat:

if you edit your hostsfile and put e.g. `198.51.233.1 neocities.org embed-html.neocities.org` into it (along with any other subdomains you want to access) it works fine!

Just edit /etc/hosts (on most OSes) or C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (on Windows). Add a line that says 198.51.233.1 (which is Neocities' IP address), followed by a space, followed by neocities.org, optionally followed by any other neocities sites (with spaces separating them all). Then Neocities will work. (For you.)

If you add a line to your hosts file, just remember to remove it (or comment it out) when Neocities is back to normal. Otherwise, if they ever CHANGE the IP address Neocities is at, then you'll get "left behind" on the old one and you'll be really confused and nobody will be able to work out why you, specifically, are getting excluded!

There was a legal mixup in India when a law firm filled a lawsuit against a similar sounding URL. Their domain registrar, Namecheap, didn't read through the order fully and banned Neocities without checking. They were able to work with the law firm to communicate with Namecheap and get it unbanned, but are switching registrars as a result, because the experience apparently wasn't great for them:
