i want to switch to linux. i have a few questions though.

hi there!

it just dawned upon me that i can feasibly switch to linux at this point, or at LEAST dual-boot on my desktop. (i might go for this option first, to be honest).

i will note that i am not 100% new to linux, ive used Arch in the past on a laptop. so i know how to install and such. what im more worried about is finding alternatives for software i use daily now, and uh. oddly specific, but possibly getting The Sims 4 to work on linux? though if i am to dual boot, i guess its not much of a concern.

im also curious to know what i should know now before i jump back in? last i used linux was... maybe 2021? anything changed since then? did anything surprise you, coming from windows? let me know.

as for various software i use;
- drawing software (currently using clip studio paint, have used krita before)
- video editing software (currently using davinci resolve)
- games (currently minecraft right now, but i know that works on linux.)
- music player (currently using foobar2000)

There's actually a music player inspired by foobar2000 for Linux called Fooyin. It's available as a Flatpak. So you should be able to install it on most distros.

- games (currently minecraft right now, but i know that works on linux.)

You can just use Proton, Lutris, Bottles, etc. Just be sure to add the games manually.

My main "computer" is actually a Steam Deck. Its desktop mode of SteamOS is based on Arch Linux but it has been user friendly to me so far.

I can't replace Clip Studio Paint, it's just too epic so I force myself to pay the subscription on my Galaxy Tablet...However, for quick editing jobs, Gimp and Krita do the trick. There have been people who have tried to get CSP running on Linux, but it is prone to crashes and because i dont have a graphics tablet anyway, I've just accepted my fate.

Kdenlive seems to be a decent enough bare bones video editor. I havent messed with it much but its not as bulky as Davinci Resolve and feels a lot more user friendly, something i consider a rarity in spaces.

You can pretty much run most steam games through proton at this point and it'll work. Theres a few games that I've not had access too after an update broke stuff, but usually it gets fixed with tweaking.

Pretty much the name of the game is how patient are you with fiddling around to make stuff work.

well, i've got all of the time in the world lately... so im willing to give it an earnest shot this time. i think the thing that really made me nervous in the past is using the terminal. however, these days, im much more familiar with terminals now.

Oh yeah I've been around Command Line Interfaces for a bit with messing with yt-dlp for downloading youtube videos and ffmpeg for doing edits and gifs and stuff. You can make shell scripts but outside of being a developer you really dont have to touch it often if at all. I think the most intense thing I had to do was use the terminal to add nodejs to the enviornment PATH manually since my site is built with Astro.

No problem. Some other Linux audio players I see spoken of in high regard are DeaDBeeF, Amarok, Strawberry (only free on Linux), and Audacious. I personally use AIMP, but native Linux support is still in beta. So I can't recommend it. (Before the AIMP6 builds, AIMP would have to come with Wine installed to work.)

I've been using a gaming focused distribution of Arch called Garuda for around 9 months now. Had very minimal problems, but there are things that you should be aware of.

Gaming has been greatly improved on Linux! It's good to check ProtonDB if you use Steam, they will typically give you info on launch options or the best version of proton to use as well as scoring each game with their compatibility.

For The Sims 4 specifically, it looks like the game works fine as long as you keep it in windowed fullscreen.

I've even had luck running games from Itch.io onto Steam to use their specific versions of Proton and have had great results.

TL;DR, Gaming on Linux is easy if you're willing to troubleshoot when issues arise.

CSP works fine with WINE (at least on Linux Mint Debian Edition, which is what I use), you just have to download materials on their website. Otherwise no issues. 

kdenlive is a popular option for video editing on Linux. I found it decent but not as powerful feeling as Sony Vegas which I used years ago. Haven't tried it too much though. Free, so worth checking out.

It definitely helps encourage me to use it as my daily driver haha. I also installed a little radio widget in my system tray to add indie internet radio stations to!

krita seems to be pretty good from what I hear

davinci resolve already has a port for the linux familly (They say Rocky linux, but when they say that 99% of the time it will work on practically any distribution)

Steam/Minecraft works, Valve spent most of their extra resources on Proton/Gamescope rather then maintaining there games.

Clementine, just use it. Pritty good (I've been using it for 6+ years now) and has CD rip functionality and net services (if you use spotify or whatever)

Sims 4 dose not work on anything LOL
