hello melonland! i am desperately trying to find new music ever since i quit spotify and the safe but boring cycle of listening to algorithm based tracks. (and also because of other reasons like the ceo shilling out to ai but i'm not gonna dwell on that)  :skull:

i'm trying to change the way i listen to music by being more intentional and less, uh. how do i put it. less just being spoon fed to me. i don't want things recommended by an algorithm from youtube that's just a lottery of who gets lucky to get the spotlight. i want things shared by real people. :ha: i want to download songs. i want to buy cds. i want to buy vinyl. i want to burn things onto cds and sit on the floor and just melt to the music! i want stuff given to me through legit conversation!

anyways! thanks to @zomboid (haiii)  i got into moe shop and meltt! and now i crave more. so i'm asking for anyone (and this can be for anyone! not just me!) to give me artists they find, whether it be mainstream or indie. i just want to explore my soundbuds, even if i end up not liking the genre.

also, i noticed that a lot of my artists are anglophonic centric, or j pop. so i want to change that. please give me artists from different countries! i want arab artists, african artists, south american, central asian, west asian, literally whatever you can think of. i really just want music injected in my brain and i want to explore new things and feel like a kid again (#°Д°) okay. okay i'm done rambling. hit me with what you got

I'm always down to talk music!  :ozwomp:

I actually do a lot of music collecting, I like to have both physical and digital copies of everything from video game OSTs to local indie artists and such. I do my best to keep track of things like the year something was released, what album it was from, you know; all that good stuff. However I will say that I don't often keep track of where a particular artist is from, that's something I should retroactively try to fill out because it's actually an interesting part to include in my opinion, so thank you for bringing that to my attention!

That being said, allow me a moment to recommend a random assortment of music for ya!

First up, a personal favorite of mine would be The Maxwell Implosion - Small Circle of Friends from 2002. According to Discogs it's a Downtempo Electronic album that comes from Germany. It has a lot of interesting tracks, some I'd describe as being atmospheric; others maybe psychedelic? My favorite tracks on the album would have to be The Upper Left Hand and Treat Her Groovy.

Another great downtempo type album would be AIR French Band - Moon Safari from 1998! I admit that I don't know whether the official name of the band is AIR or AIR French Band, I've heard it both ways. While Discogs doesn't list a location like it does for some albums, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say these guys might be French. The album is described as Electronic Pop, as well as Downtempo, Dream Pop, and Synth Pop.

If these albums are a little too slow for ya then you might enjoy checking out Starjunk 95! Starjunk is a modern artist who's work I mainly find on YouTube, they produce a variety of genres; but primarily stick to funky upbeat techno. There's a lot of clear inspiration from Future Funk, Hip Hop, and Techno. If you enjoy music from games like JetSet Radio then Starjunk 95 would probably be to your liking as well! Personal recommendations would probably be City Girl and Groove District!

If you're interested in more ambient, chill music; I really vibe with Desert Sand Feels Warm At Night - 夢の砂漠 (Dream Desert) from 2001! It captures the feeling of older, classic vaporwave and has been described as Slushwave, and Dreampunk neither of which I've never heard of before the album in question.

I have a ton of music to recommend depending on what you're looking for. If you have any specific vibes or genres you enjoy I can very likely cater my recommendations to that.

Growing up, I heard a lot of Cantonese and Mandarin songs, glad I have a opportunity to share them here!

  • 林保怡/陳豪/黃德斌 - 年少無知 (Cantonese), ending song for 天與地 (a Hong Kong show), it was so long ago I don't remember the plot, but the ending song was extremely iconic
  • 容袓兒 - 連續劇 (Cantonese), the opening song for OnCall 36小時, a show about doctors, surgeons and operations. It was my personal favorite opening from all the HK shows I've watched
  • 光良 - 童話 (Mandarin), it was one of the must-sing songs in karaoke when I was a kid (I'm not sure if it still is now), but it is an extremely beautiful song.
  • 劉德華 - 17歲 (Cantonese), a song I've heard many times when dad was driving the car (he's got a lot of great songs saved in his player), I always loved the flute solo.
  • Jer - 人類群星閃耀時 (Cantonese), the songs above are somewhat old, but this song is quite new (as least imo), the vocals, lyrics and music are powerful, it stands out to me and I love it

There are many great Cantonese songs out there, but it would take a long time to list them all.

Edit: Small typo

I also stopped using Spotify a while back and am building a music library that's actually my own, though i stopped for different reasons.

A lot of what i listen to is American or British, but i'll skip those for now.

Anna Mieke is an Irish folk singer, though all her work that i've heard is in English. I like most of the songs from both of her albums.

One of my favorite songs ever is En Aften ved Svannefossen (An Afternoon at the Swan Waterfall), by a few people. I don't know about their other work.

If you like Celtic stuff, you could try Danú or At First Light.

Silly Wizard (Scottish) is also good, and different from Danú and AFL.

I only found out about Bjørn Tomren (Norwegian) a couple years ago when i saw him live while on vacation in Norway. I don't care for most of his work (not a big fan of yodeling) but i like his song Frankenstein. (YouTube link)

Dmitri Shostakovich (Soviet) has some good work, especially Jazz Suite II.

I used to listen to a lot of video game and some film scores, and covers thereof. C418 (did most of the music in Minecraft before Lena Raine) is German, Camille (French) had a track in Rattatouille, Koji Kondo (Japanese) composed a bunch of Nintendo games, Joe Hisaishi (Japanese) scored some Ghibli films, Yashunori Nishiki (Japanese) did Octopath Traveler,..

I think the world of classical music is less anglo-centric. Bach, Chopin, Beethoven, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, etc.

And many more, but you said you're not looking for English stuff.

If you want to just try some random stuff, see if your local public library carries CDs and borrow some. Or if there's a CD store in your town, they might have a $1 bin or something similar.

I'm also reminded of a blog post by Steph Vee that i read some time ago.

Hi! It's awesome that you're doing this! If you're looking for music from other countries, try Sweden! And no, I don't mean the music swedes have written for other (mostly American) artists...cough cough I'm looking at you Max Martin.

I'm a big fan of jazz! And Sweden has had an interesting history with that genre. Esbjörn Svensson is one of my favorites to come out of the contemporary swedish music scene.

Esbjörn Svensson Trio - Dating

Another that I literally found TODAY, thanks to a friend of mine sending it to me (on the topic of natural conversational recommendations). He's a drummer like me, and we've both had the drummer in this recording as our teacher! I had a private lesson with the guy like two weeks ago! And I would never have found it if not thanks to him. This recording is really ultra vintage, so if you like that aesthetic you'll love this!

Pierre Swärd Hammond Jazz´n Soul Group 2000 Jazz På Nalen SVT

If jazz isn't your thing, how about some punk? (And post-punk). One of the other genres swedes really stuck to for a while, and still do. Grisen Skriker is my favorite! Though sadly they only ever made one album. It's a banger though. A few of the members later went on to form Imperiet and Ebba Grön. Linking both below.

Grisen Skriker - Sextiofem

Imperiet - Du ska va president

Ebba Grön - Staten & Kapitalet

Staten & Kapitalet is a real feeler for me. It's so angsty. It's basically a communist anthem at every party I've gone to throughout my teens. Screaming this at the top of your lungs. Everybody sings, everybody screams out their frustration at the system. It's become such a staple.

Anyways, if you want to find more music, check out my site! I'm documenting my entire CD collection, so if you're out of ideas you can always head over and pick a random album! Happy hunting!
