lifecasting: the "new reality tv" that never was
:pc:  :skull:  :pc:  :skull:  :pc:  :skull:

do you know about the livestreaming platform twitch? (i hope you do...) it was actually a spinoff of another livestreaming platform called justin.tv. in its later years it was a multi-category livestreaming platform, but originally there was only one category: lifecasting, and there was only one streamer: justin kan. (hey, thats where the name comes from!!) it was a very simple platform, justin would stream every moment of his life 24/7. it was pretty popular, the site added other lifecasters (including ijustine), but it didnt take off until they let users stream content other than lifecasts, and the whole lifecasting concept pretty much died there.

i never got the chance to watch justin.tv, but did you guys ge to back in the day? please drop a comment so i know im not the only on who still knows about it lmao

wow i had heard of justin.tv but never knew thats where the name came from? thats crazy

i remember when the site just called "livestream" was a thing. thats where the first big herobrine video came from i believe. there was also this weird program called join.me where you could stream your desktop activity to a group of friends and people on deviantart played with that all the time. one time some random strangers appeared on my stream larping as my little pony characters and it was genuinely the most awesome thing in the world to me

I remember one of the first instances of a video game streamer I've ever seen was the 4 Player Podcast on justin.tv. I still check back on some of their funnier moments every now and again for nostalgia's sake.

Never knew about the lifecasting aspect of how justin.tv got started. It's interesting how trends can loop like that! Now Twitch has a whole category for people who are just streaming themselves walking around or doing whatever.
