Bing's AI delisted neocities websites from their search results despite it not violating any of the policies.
Don't worry, it's back after the arstechnica article, but it's still sad that some random "AI" removed it for seemingly no reason.

Moderation should never be handled by a bot in it's entirety, there should always be a team of humans at the other end to catch  issues like this

AI wins the day yet again  how awful.

I'm glad it's back, though. It's a good thing that those people still listen to backlash, the only way to actually fight against all of this is to keep up pressure. Let's hope that bubble will burst sooner than later.

Fun landscaping architecture fact #3: Did you know that ancient Egyptian pyramids and tombs contained little scale models of gardens and life in general? They are immaculately carved and painted, allowing us to view how their lives looked in great detail. In Tomb TT280 (The burial site of Meketre) archeologists found several models. Look up the likes of "Meketre Tomb Models" to find pictures, it's fascinating!

I agree entirely, the increase of AI decision making has really started to get to me.. The one quote from the old IBM manual keeps being brought up, the whole "a computer cannot be held responsible" thing, and I think companies are treating it as the ultimate scapegoat and blame-washing operation. As in, they can claim any bad decisions are the fault of the AI and that they've DEFINITELY fine-tuned it and it would DEFINITELY never happen again guys

I think it's not very professional of them to trust AI in that stuff. So many things can go wrong, just like this for example. What happened is unfair both for neocities and their users.

And who knows, maybe other websites have this problem too, big companies should really try to not put AI literally everywhere.  :notgood:

It's a bit scary being so at the mercy of a couple search engine companies. Web search is so vital to the modern net, it's a shame we don't have something thats a bit more on the side of the people using it and not the corporations running it. I think this Bing example (although it was clearly just a mistake) is still really good proof that something needs to be done.

I think about this sometimes. Of course, there are search engines that prioritize non-commercial websites like wiby.me, neosearch.site, or marginalia. But those aren't as well known. One thing that stuck out to me when I started using I2P is that it's common to still use website directories to find new websites, much like in the early years of the web. But I worry that if a popular web directory was owned by company, the web would be even more "curated" by these corporations than with popular search engines because you're limited to websites on the directory. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a simple solution. The closest thing to a solution is to tell friends who are still on these corporation platforms about niche websites you like.

On one hand, it's nice to see news like the French government opting for Qwant instead of Google. But Qwant is, of course, using Bing! We really are on the mercy of Google and Bing as far as the mainstream is considered.

Yeah it's alarming. I use DuckDuckGo personally, but thats literally just bing as well. It seems like most of the alternative search engines are still using the tech from the big corpos or combining it in some way. It's a sour state for things to be in, and I can't really think of any possible solution.
