My brother wants to install Betacraft on Linux (he uses Pop os) but hes having a lot of trouble because theres no documentation on howw to install betacraft and it installs as a jar which requires installing java and Java installs on linux as a tar so it doesn't automatically know if it's installed. Theres also another program he had to install through commandline that would allow him to open jar files but he couldnt open the launcher with it. can anyone help me and him? thanks

Java is a compiled binary, and jar files are launchers that you launch with the java binary - so normally you do "(Path to your java binary)/java -jar (path to your jar file).jar"

But just use Prism :ok: It does the same thing and there is already a whole guide to it on the wiki plus its in most linux app stores. Then you can follow this if you need to add betacraft fixes: https://github.com/betacraftuk/legacyfix/blob/v2/docs/Prism%20Launcher.md

You don't need a tar, I assume you read that nonsense from the linked article on the page, that's absolutely unnecessary, it's like installing a zip on windows you are doing everything manually. It should be available in whatever package manager Pop_os has, (and if not that guide might help) but I usually do things via the command line, so I'll answer with that. Try "sudo apt-get install openjdk-21-jdk", "sudo apt-get install default-jre" or "sudo apt-get install openjdk-21-jre" which should be sufficient.
You may need to restart your computer, after that you wanna check if it has been installed correctly, so again open the terminal and type "java -version". You can simply run the jar file with "java -jar [path/to/your/file]" and follow the instructions on screen. I can't help past this point because I don't use Betacraft and more generally I don't currently play Minecraft.

If they ask for Betacraft that's probably because they don't wanna use prism.

That said, if you can't get betacraft working, it's worth giving prism a try.
