Hello!

I've been using outlook for years now as my main email inbox because it was used by the school I went to. I'm out of school these days but I'm still kickin' it with outlook, dodgy ads and all.
I really hate outlook, it's so overengineered. The screen is overtaken with options I'll never use, it keeps trying to 'fix' my writing with some sort of mysterious generative AI ghost hovering over my shoulder... however, I haven't found an alternative I like enough to switch so far. I've ended up with multiple emails with different providers (outlook, gmail) that I definitely don't need.
The closest I've come to liking an email service is proton mail and that might just be the way forward, but I'm interested in hearing about the email services people on the forum choose to use and why. I don't want to commit the time to switching fully to proton if there's an option I'd like more out there.

So, my question: is there good email? Maybe I'll find out!  :dot:

I currently use Proton, Tuta, and Disroot. Tuta is my favorite of those, but none feel especially great. I've heard that Mailbox and Mugida are good but i have not tried them.

Worth remembering that your email provider and your email client don't (usually) have to be related to one another. Like, I can use Proton as my provider but Thunderbird as my client, for example (Proton's a little complex for that because you need Proton Bridge to handle the E2E encryption, but other email providers don't usually have that limitation and you can just connect the two via IMAP/SMTP etc.).

@elkie you said you're using Outlook, and go on to describe it as a provider, which suggests that you mean Outlook.com? Which for most people is a combination of a provider (Outlook.com) and a client (Outlook 365 for Outlook.com). But it doesn't have to be: you can use Outlook as a client even with GMail as a provider, for example. Or you could use Sup as a client and GMail as a provider. And so on.

Anyway: Proton suits me well, but I don't know much about their free tier so if you're looking for a free provider I can't really speak to them.

And in case you are looking for a client which it sounds like from the description, my host had roundcube webmail as their default and I'm happy with that one.

Tuta looks like a pretty solid alternative for me from what I've read about it so far. I think proton and tuta are the ones I'm considering most at the moment, thank you for the recs. Funnily enough, Disroot seems to have had some sort of storage problem when I checked their site, I hope they're able to get that working again.

your email provider and your email client don't (usually) have to be related to one another.

I use outlook as a provider and I just have a clump of random email clients (outlook and gmail) that I use under that umbrella. I'm basically just looking for recommendations and thoughts about either/or, I want to cast a wide net and see what I can catch! I'd like to eventually condense into only having one or two email addresses.

And in case you are looking for a client which it sounds like from the description, my host had roundcube webmail as their default and I'm happy with that one.

I haven't heard of this one and I'll take a look, thank you! The UI looks nice and familiar so it'd be an easy switch. It's going on the list.
