Let's say you have a page on your website dedicated to a topic, and then you join a webring for fans of that topic. You put the webring widget on your website. My question is, do you put the widget on your home/links page, or the page dedicated to the topic of the webring?

If you put all your webring widgets on your home or links page, they're easy to find and people can quickly see which rings you're part of. But if you put each one on the relevant page, people who are actually exploring the webring land directly on the relevant part of your site. I'm leaning towards the second option but I feel like most people do the first, so I wanted to ask for people's opinions on this.

(This is also assuming that the page where you put the widget is also the page that you link when signing up to the webring. So I guess there's a secret third option: linking your home page but putting the widget somewhere else, or vice versa. But I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that having the widget on the same page where people land is good webring etiquette, since it makes it easy to click through the ring with the widget links.)

ah, great topic! i put webring widgets on the page that's most relevant to each ring, and sign up for rings with whichever page i put the widget on. it's the less common way to do it these days, but i prefer it!

my perspective, when visiting someone's site:
  • all the widgets in one spot -> too many choices, so i can't decide which one to click on, and i ignore them all
  • widget about [topic] on page for [topic] -> i'm on the page because i'm interested in [topic], so i happily explore the ring to find more :ha:

my perspective, when exploring a webring:
  • link takes me to the homepage -> i look around for page about [topic] and feel disappointed when i can't find one (and i feel lost when the widget isn't on the page i landed on)
  • link takes me to page about [topic] -> i think "YAAAAY webpage about [topic]! :dive:"
