5 months later, my opinion on Bluesky has changed... I actually kind of like it now!
What pushed me to pick up my account was after attending local conventions, so I needed a semi-mainstream site to "anchor" my presence and contact people. It's been going decently now, and I found some specific fandom communities with a decent presence there. I even have a free domain I got from handles.club.

I still don't like posting art on there, since it feels like a popularity contest and the site really hates transparent images. I have no idea how people get off the ground without tagging or use alt tags... The blocking function could also use work, same with having more privacy features like locking accounts. But I'm finally starting to enjoy Bluesky the way people liked pre-Musk Twitter. I think the issue is a lot of people use it for electoral politics, lol... What a miserable way to go online.

I started a Bluesky account a few months ago to promote and discuss my blog posts on a supposedly "better" social media platform, and can't really see what all the fuss is about. It has been next to impossible for me to build any sort of community there. It seems like unless you're chronically online and politics-focused, Bluesky isn't a good fit for you. The CEO also seems kind of unhinged -- no different from all the other questionable tech CEOs out there.

I've personally found Mastodon to be a much more welcoming space.

I got a bluesky account in wake of the YouTube privacy whatever the hell u call it, number one because internet archive just wasn't cutting it and number two I wanted to see what the anti twitter really was like. since I've joined I've noticed a few things...
there's a lot of nsfw... maybe there isn't a setting to turn it off or I just cant find it? I can ignore it tho :) unless a family member is looking over my shoulder... :ziped:
number two, there are NO CORPORATE POSTS!!! YAYYYY :ozwomp: I get a ton of posts from random, small posters instead, which I prefer MAJORLY to being forced to see mr muskrats and mr tangerineboy's divorce arc
honestly, theres not much to say on my part. its just twitter

if you go to settings > moderation, there should be an option to turn it off! i attached a screenshot of it; on my account, it was already off, but i enabled it for the sake of showing the different options it offers.

THANK YOU!! I'm going to do that now :ozwomp:
with that out of the way, bluesky is a just fine social media platform in my opinion, I really only have a problem with the nsfw :]

I have the same problem with Bluesky as I did with Xitter: it's a microblog.

Microblogs are generally not cool or good because limiting thoughts into bite-sized little chunks makes for horrendous discourse regardless of whether or not it's federated. The medium makes things dumber because not only does it limit the actual content of thought, but it also eliminates a lot of context—and that's extremely important for good discourse.

Ive came to the conclusion that bluesky is ASS.

Keeping this thread open, but a reminder to everyone:

Fedi/Mastodon users were right to begin with.

Fedi/Mastodon users were right to begin with.

Kinda… (minus waiting for all the anime OC artists in my community to want to use ActivityPub again:) I feel like I could only truly love/enjoy the ActivityPub experience if I were to self-host, though.

I feel like Bluesky/AtProto and Mastodon/ActivityPub share the innate, human problem of admins going rogue:
  • instance admins in the case of ActivityPub.
  • PDS admins in the case of AtProto.

General bad behavior, admins having little wars with other admins and blocking whole instances, admins unfortunately having their mental health tank and shutting down instances before people can make evacuation plans… that kind of thing.

I feel like the initial draw to Bluesky/AtProto for me was the promise of being able to migrate post history between PDSes were you to want to migrate to another PDS. Compared to how, ActivityPub is kind of a mixed bag regarding whether you can move your posts with you when you migrate, depending on what software the instance is running. (Follow connections, yes. Posts, no.)

The problem is the Bluesky/AtProto devs didn't focus enough effort into making spinning up a PDS one-click easy. It's currently very "you must be this smart to ride". And, once the Bluesky app took off, they pivoted focus to that instead of the AtProto protocol—what they should have maintained focus on. Meanwhile, there are a handful of one-click-deploy services for ActivityPub instances (which I cannot yet afford, but maybe soon 🤞).

I don't use it personally. I used to be OBSESSED with twitter as a teenager to the point that you could almost consider it an addiction (though luckily i got banned when i was 16, apparently elon musk doesn't like getting spammed pictures of wario under all his tweets) and it REALLY messed me up. All the people i followed on twitter were obsessed with drama and discourse over things nobody in real life cared about.

Anyway, this is important because i hear that bluesky is a LOT like twitter and like....i know that the communities probably AREN'T the same, but still....i don't want to risk getting stuck in that vortex again.

wow I didnt even know about all the CEO shit :drat:

but erm, regardless of that, not  HUGE fan. for a few reasons, one being its trying to be a twitter clone in the wrong way. I dont want a LITERAL twitter clone, in fact i dont even like twitter that much either. Also the interface i dont like. like I REALLY dont like it. I dislike it more than the twitter one. its just meh

you know, you make a really good point. i’ve wondered why i could never get into neither twitter, mastodon, nor bluesky… and it’s because i fundamentally don’t like microblogging services. they invite discourse and discourage deep thought, especially modern twitterX. i can’t say that bluesky is any better; if you left twitter because of political complaining and moaning, like i did, then going to bluesky won’t fix that

Good points above, I never got into social media posting, like little micro-blogposts. It's easy to just like, reblog from other people but I've never posted much myself. In the end, Bluesky didn't stick with me either. All the discoure stuff does not suit with my mental state at all either, so it's better if I stay out of it as much as possible.

I was the exact same. My social media addiction just switched platforms after getting banned. What's scary is that no matter how uninteresting, aggravating or useless the posts generally were/are on Twitter, you still ate it up. Like a starved monkey chowing down on endless bowls of grey, unseasoned porridge, patting its belly and asking for more. It's horrific and nauseating.

Nowadays I have much less patience for bullshit, so Bluesky never clicked. I don't even know how I found it interesting in the first place. But the teenage mind will do anything to numb itself.
