This website called http://www.futureexpress.net/, I visit it almost daily because it has a lot of cool artwork on it. Sadly it hasn't been active since 2008 or so and some of the work is already lost.

It's one of those sites that I keep my eye on.

What a pretty, vintage site! Very nostalgic

I feel that way about http://diabellalovescats.com/ .. it's been up since before I was born and the lady sure put a lot into making it. She last updated it last year; the internet would truly be lesser without it.

Omg this cat site, I might have to include it in my next newsletter :omg:

I feel this way about http://www.frogsonice.com/froggy/ its not been updated since 2007 although they still seem to renew the domain name every year.

Similar thing with Future Express, It has been up since 2002 or so. Usually websites like these tend to last for around 10-20 years.

All of these sites are amazing -- the style of FUTUREEXPRESS is so clean and fresh even in 2022, that sort of timeless design is really impressive.

I'll have to find them at some point, but there are a few artist websites I've always really liked the design of. They're also all mostly in Japanese, but I was always impressed by the uniqueness of each layout, and how much attention was put into building an appealing looking website through just HTML/CSS alone. Fortunately some of them still were updating, last I checked.

There are definitely a few old video game or anime websites/forums I used to really enjoy that are no longer around. It's definitely a bummer. While there aren't any older sites I frequently check up with on a weekly/daily basis, I am delighted to find that Golden Sun Realm is still up, though it hasn't updated significantly since 2012. I was always fond of game websites since I couldn't afford physical game guides as a kid, so this site used to be a big personal mainstay. Quite a few of the affiliate sites are still surprisingly online in an archival state too; then again the fanbase was always pretty dedicated. There's a section on another site dedicated to hosting all of the battle animations (used to steal these for RPG maker games all the time haha); I would be terribly sad if that ever got lost to time.

These kitties are so cute! I always like seeing them on people's sites. I love that you have one as your signature. I almost thought it was the actual widget one time.. Lol

Archives are great, BUT I think there is a different feeling between a dead archive and a site that still "living" on its own server with its own address. There is always the chance it might get updated again, its still where it was always supposed to be and its not fully a memory yet.

Yes! There's an old forum I signed up in 2004 that's still active today. I don't post there any more, but every few months I go and check in on it. It's a weird situation where registrations are closed, it's only readable with an account, and the guy paying for hosting stopped communicating years ago. But it still has a loyal base of users that post there, even though the plug will probably get pulled any day now.

Another website I go on to check if it's not dead. https://www.abcb.com/ It hasn't been updated since 2004

I found some old anime fanart dating back to 2001, can't remember the page but it's certainly a time capsule.

For me it is: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/. The most comprehensive site about bike mechanics. Full of advice, compatibility table, and old timer anectodes. The author passed away in 2008, but the site is still a reference today, and maintained by the family. The layout is a perfect illustration of pre-web 2.0 internet. Simple and usable.

This is why we have Wayback Machine and https://archive.ph/ !

This is why I don't do this with static sites, at least if they go down, we can still use Web Archive to experience them fully. I subscribe to any RSS feeds on cool sites I come across, though!

Forums are a different story, though. I visit a few daily and see if I can post on them. Some even have chatboxes that I can post to real quick to say I did my bit! :ozwomp:

If you're curious here are some forums I visit:
Untamed Heart (Klonoa forum)
Gex Forums
Sonic Retro forums

I really want to see forums make a full comeback to replace programs like Discord, but even now it may be wishful thinking...

Other archive projects were mentioned that are very good, a particularly relevant project that hasn't been mentioned is maintained by Archive Team: https://wiki.archiveteam.org/index.php/Main_Page/Current_Projects

They have a page on the wiki specifically listing websites that are not actively maintained and should be archived to preserve them. It might be worth adding Future Express to the list, or if that's difficult, contacting them to ask how to add it.

It's not a queue, and adding it doesn't ensure preservation. But adding it at least will get it more attention.

Also if you Join the Internet Archive (it's free) you will gain the option of archiving websites with more than one page, more than one page at a time. This is one way you can help preserve as much of the website as possible.
