The "one sentence per line" thing is REALLY helpful advice though! Thank you!

You're welcome.

I purposely took it out because I wanted my site to appear the same on both desktop and mobile.

Well, as you might see from these screenshots, there's no guarantee they'll look the way you intended. This is how your site looks in Lynx, a web browser for terminals and command-line interfaces.

It's generally a good idea to test with Lynx, by the way, be a lot of people who need screenreaders or a Braille display use it.

Oooh, I didn't even know Lynx existed! Thank you, I'll check it out!

You're welcome. Don't forget to spread the word. Lynx can be a great way to pierce paywalls because it doesn't implement JavaScript at all. That means none of those manipulative cookie consent popups, either.

Lynx will ask you if you want to let a site set cookies, but if you select "no" or "never" Lynx will honor and remember your preference.

Of course, a lot of commercial websites aren't tested with Lynx, look like parboiled shit, and work no better than they look. But it's still a good browser to have in your toolkit.

I've heard of edbrowse, and I know somebody who uses it.

I don't specifically cater to that browser when building personal websites, but I've found that if your HTML is standards-compliant and passes validation, it should work in any browser that implements the standard properly.

Except IE and Edge. But IE is dead, and Edge is based on Chromium so its developers have no excuse.

i don't mean to alarm anyone because there's nothing really to be alarmed about, but communities that enjoy harassing folks are actually very aware of melonland, neocities, and the web revival. i think it's important to carry on without regard of what could happen, because, as others have said, it's much easier to control on this side of the web than on social media, where folks can just sign up with a bunch of sockpuppet accounts in a short period of time.

it's worth reiterating that, especially if one is afraid of being brigaded or harassed, locking down your guestbook, shoutbox, and any other forms of comment systems will help significantly, and this is something we have to keep reminding folks, especially those new to the personal web. have comments go through approval processes first; then, sure, you'll have to see it, but trolls tend to fizzle out when there's zero response or acknowledgment given in any way. they'll move to easier targets, as starbreaker said.

i think the website is a great idea, and link freely, without abandon.

Oh, I didn't know that those communities knew about us. Honestly if anything that's quite reassuring, seeing how little harassment we DO face on here despite that fact. I think the most I've seen is someone posting an occasional slur in Sadgrl's chat box, but even then it gets drowned out pretty quickly.

I have a page on my site about the practices I use to surf the web, and I'm planning on making one explaining how to healthily slowly leave social media and find alternatives (without losing your social circle, etc..), but haven't done that yet.

I would love to read this! I'm sure it would be very valuable for many of us who have started the process but have one or two platforms that we can't manage to leave. Please keep us updated  :ha:

Mmmm yeah im kinda worried about that, maybe be careful where you put that link.
With how hostile some parts of the internet are, I'd rather just keep these sites to ourselves.
I feel like its better as a thing that you dont show people, but something that people decide to do themselves
Yeah, I get that. It's cozy right now, and a huge influx would definitely change that. I think putting some info out there is good, but people interested will find it after doing their own research, if that makes sense.

Iv seen this discussion come up MANY times since I joined Neocities in 2016.. I'm not sure I can add much other than to describe what Iv seen so far.

In those early semi-pre-web-revival days it was a tiny community; there were like 20 active sites and even if you never interacted with anyone, somehow it felt like everyone knew everyone else because, with so few sites, we all had the time to explore every corner of everyone's site. It didn't matter what people posted about, we would link to anyone who had any kind of personal site because it was just so rare - there was very little judgment or worry because it was all so obscure and everyone was just figuring out the basics.

Today it's totally different, this forum alone has a webring with over 600 sites (and it's not the biggest webring around); almost every time I visit the Surf Club here I see a site I've never seen before or have not had the time to explore more than a page or two. The pressure of quality, social expectations and feeling of exposure is indescribably bigger these days. I have no idea whose badges to put on my site anymore, if I put a badge for every site Iv enjoyed my site would be nothing but badges

None of that's a bad thing of course! If Neocities had stayed as just being a dozen random peeps, it would have died years ago. Watching the growth of this space has been one of the most exciting and inspiring things about being part of it. I do feel a bit overwhelmed sometimes, and that's a perfectly natural worry to have about how it might be in the future.
