I've realized I've been having a dilemma when it comes to webmastery. I can't stop worrying about things like where I'm hosting my website, what my domain is, and other such things.

I had my own domain at virosm.net, but I started to worry. Having my own domain adds so much pressure, I feeel like I have to worry more about what I put on my site, as I'm not with some free webhosting service anymore. I know that sounds weird, but my own independent site feels sooo much bigger.

This is why I moved to Nekoweb, but after seeing a post in a Discord server about one of the dev's leaving because they felt like the project had left behind the very reason they wanted to start making it, it left a sour taste in my mouth about using it

Why shouldnt I just use Neocities like everyone else I wonder? It's been around for longer, it should be more reliable anyway! But I neeed to pay a subscription for audio files and stuff like that, and I'm trying to save money...

I still have that domain! It wouuuld be nice to just, not deal with other services entirely, and just stay in my own little independent hosting I have set up myself. But, that has the same issue I was worrying about in the first place! ...And I'm starting to dislike virosm.net, It doesn't match up at all with my website's "Rol's Space Cabin" name.

I couuuuld buy rols space cabin dot net... but again, I'm trying to save money! Especially this month, I spent so so much last month and I'm trying to avoid that this month!

Additionally, I'm moving around soososoo much lately, I should just be keeping it consistenttttt

But all this has me thinking. Wasn't what I wanted from my site to have fun? I cant have fun when I'm worrying about this kinda stuff, but it's hard to just, ignore these worries, though.

It's been upsetting me, any advice on this? I'd love some help. I do wanna have fun making my site but I just can't stop thinking about all these things regarding hosting.

My advice: Try to set the question back for some time. As long as you can do what you want on the space where you are, and don't stumble over any limitations by the host, use it. If you stumble over limitations, move to a more fitting one.
Concentrate on making your website - work on your design and content until you consider both somewhat good; you can even craft it locally if you want, and search for a fitting host once you are satisfied with what you have. Maybe working on the essential thing will help you to put those "side-thoughts" behind.

Also: I've no idea what is going on at neocities or nekoweb, but I believe that both are rather cool when it comes to webservices - try not to worry that much about it, for most of your visitors it probably doesn't matter at all where your site is hosted.

To quote SSX Tricky "Geez honey let it go already"  - I know thats easier said then done, but when it comes to hosts, if it hosts webpages and connects to the internet, its a perfect host.
Use what you've got and don't worry about it. If half your site is one one domain and the other half on another, perfect, that's what you've got  :mail:

It really doesn't matter whats happening technically on the backend, what the url looks like or whats happening with the people running your host; all of that is irrelevant compared to you and what you do with what you've got.

You'll have to find your own way to make that click in your head, but fun starts when you stop worrying about what the worlds doing and start doing what you enjoy  :dog:

Good reply @Melooon

Our sites should not be stressful to work on. If you want stress become a professional WebDev "I want this page to look and act like this, and I want a working mock-up by tomorrow morning, it's going live by the end of the week."

When I started my site, I started to run out of half-decent free hosting sites. Various pages were spread over half a dozen hosts, Lycos, Freeserve, Bravepages and the rest, all long gone. It was only later I thought about actually paying for a host, but I went another way and started self-hosting and everything that came with that.

Money is always a problem, it was for me when I was younger, but anything that concerns that on the internet can wait a while. Thanks to some very generous, skillful individuals and organizations you can do practically everything for free.

Organizations come and go, my early hosts did, early services my site depended on like Dynamic DNS stopped being free and went to a paid model so I found another, more recently Yesterweb imploded. It's a nuisance finding a good fit, but there are always alternatives.

Putting a bit of money into your hobbies is always going to be a bit stressful. Just think of it like any other subscription service or bill. Or any other expenses for your hobbies. Its like buying paints, or paying your internet bill, or whatever resonates with you.

Also, why should you use Neocities? Like, who cares.

It also doesn't matter if your URL doesn't match your website. Webcomics like Dinosaur Comics and Pokey the Penguin have URLs which don't correspond to the comics hosted on them. And in modern times, if you go to x.com you will see Twitter for some reason so don't go there.

It did take me some time, but the worries have eventually subsided, and I am starting to like what I got here. If it works it works, and I think this is what works best, regardless of disagreements between people.

I do have one more thing on my mind, which I'm sure other people can relate to. I will make that as another forum topic though.
