I love to scrapbook. I specifically like to collect ephemera, things not meant to last/be saved, built to be used for only a short time. food wrappers, stickers, receipts, birthday cards, other packaging, wrapping paper, things like that. (the wikipedia page has a longer list) I find it a very beautiful process, that makes me think alot about the beauty in our everyday. I want to make a virtual version of this. what things do you think you'd class as virtual ephemera? the wikipedia page discusses this a bit, and there's been discussion of this in other places, but im interested in how you guys would define it?

Interesting idea! Never thought of virtual scrapbooks in that way. I've seen "digital scrapbooks" as in, pngs of everyday things arranged in something like photoshop to make a scrapbook page/art piece. Now as to what would count as virtual ephemera, my mind goes to stuff like notifications, pop-ups, emails, login screens, digital recipts, everyday stuff like that. Not quit sure if that's what you meant or what that would look like.
I was thinking of making a scrapbook themed page (the aforementioned photoshoped mish-mash kind) so this is something to think about.

definitely what I meant! login screens, while more permanent than things like notifications, are not places people typically stay for a long time, and that's very interesting! hmm I wonder how I'd scrapbook them though... i wonder, making something that sort of behaves somewhat similarly to a webgarden, as like a little clipping of the thing?

also encouragements on your scrapbook! it sounds cool! :>

well, here's what i've got so far, including a wonky attempt at using iframes to take a "clipping" of a website login page!

That's a really cute idea!

It's an interesting idea, and it would be really cool to look back on

but
I kinda struggle at talking about/documenting myself and my life, even if it is just on a tiny little neocities site..

i have a monthly scrapbook page! i don't put a ton of stuff on it, though, partially because doing things online doesn't feel like it has as much of a footprint as doing things in real life does... i used to keep a daily planner-scrapbook where i saved receipts and tickets and such and really enjoyed it!

digital ephemera hmm.... notifications and confirmation emails, like @Orfej_sa said! especially useless notifications, like ones that apps give you just to remind you the app exists  :skull:

honestly a lot of digital stuff is in a strange place where it's kind of all disposable and you're not expected to hold onto it but it's still semi-permanent. like, a single tweet or a tiktok or whatever is supposed to be glanced at, tapped on, then forgotten about immediately while simultaneously being preserved forever. weird!!

i think "likes" count as digital ephemera, thinking about it! both the visual little number and the thing that you like. i might start adding posts/videos/etc that i click the "like" button on to my scrapbook as a way of being more reflective / dwelling on things for longer, if i can figure out a way to represent that without just straight-up reposting a bunch of stuff. maybe a monthly collage...? pondering...

screenshots i think are also digital ephemera. i usually take screenshots to share with friends or comment on and then forget about them... i often look back through my screenshots folder and don't remember the context for it at all, haha! another thing to consider adding to my page.
other things i'm pondering: browser tabs, search history, bookmarks i make "to look at later" (i usually do not look at them later)...

unfortunately for me digital scrapbooking feels like a very different process from the physical kind. just sticking something in my pocket and taping into a notebook later feels much easier than the digital equivalent! there's more friction in the virtual world. maybe i should actually try out mmm.page or hot glue since those are more geared towards collage/scrapbook-style web stuff.

@xixxii AAaaaa, screenshots are a great example that I wolud have never thought of :mark:  I always have "pockets" full of em like most of us. Got an idea to make a scrapbook piece dedicated to school at the end of the semester because thats when I have the most junk in my camera gallery, a milion email and document drafts and half-done homework. Also the sites you linked are great, never been on them before.

That's more or less what I do with my personal journal IRL, I tend to collect wrappings and flyers I was given mostly. It's quite rare but it's nice, I glue it in the book. It helps a lot to remember some stuff. I've put a belgian waffle wrapper and each time I see it I can perfectly envision that time I had. If I hadn't put it then the memory would be less accurate/more vague with less details.

But I don't want to collect absolutely everything so it's mostly important memories that end up here and not the everyday life.
