Okay, so this is something I learned over on Tumblr, and it's to curate your online experience. What does this mean?
  • Focus on things that interest you or that you enjoy
  • Tag your posts properly
  • If you see something you don't like or makes you uncomfortable, block the tags and the user and scroll on
  • Don't be afraid to search the web.

This is good advice. It also leaves me speechless as someone who was born in 1995… Because, that was how the Internet worked back when I was growing up. There was no endless scrolling fire hose of strangers’ content that you didn’t want to see, ever. If you ended up on IEatBabies.com it’s because you typed in the web address yourself, ha. You searched and clicked on pages you wanted to, or you didn’t.

i think i havent seen people talk about this fact anymore. i havent been personally on that era of the internet, but, i sure envy the feeling of exploring at your own will instead of being nearly completely controlled on content. its important to curate what you see on these times of mindless, slop content being thrown at you with a coat of jiggling keys on it to catch the eye.

Honestly right now I'm trying to figure out how to filter out all those crappy clickbaity sites from my search results. I'm tired of looking for help on something and getting 9 gorrillian sites that are top 10 lists or the same probably machine made results pages.

Also remember to come here to post whoops

Awesome thread. Another piece of advice:

Block people. Block relentlessly if you have to. Ignore any and all vagueposts stating "So-and-so blocked me, lol" because at that point, it's troll behavior or they're just making engagement bait content (People will comment aggressively to defend their fave content creators or to inquire about the tea).

Blocking people has been a savior to me. There's whole circles of the internet that I've never had to see because I blocked so many people early on.

If you ARE concerned about blocking friends and family because you don't wanna start beef with anyone, consider making an alt acct for you to comfortably browse and block as you please.  :cheerR:

YES

YES

block people. i am TIRED of people not doing it when it's necessary because it's deemed as rude, impolite, or downright insulting

blocking is a BASIC and IMPORTANT tool when surfing safely the webs, and i will not be quiet when i say that people should do it far more often to keep peace around.

Exactly. Undesirable content was easier to avoid back then, which shows how modern basic advice like this is... I've even see people on the smallweb shocked that you technically can't block someone if they exist on their own site, you just have to not visit it.

Joining the chorus about blocking: I heavily recommend to use additional tools that allow to curate your online experience - be it the good old hosts file or plugins that allow you to block certain domains. If you have the feeling that you spend more time on a page than you want, don't hesitate to use technical help to prevent yourself from automatically entering the domain. Kick it. Especially those tech-corps have a horde of psychologist to get you hooked - no shame in using any mean required to counter them.

I also recommend to use NoScript to block JS by default.
