Hello! I was wondering what way everyone likes to write. I've done all of these except the typewriter, and they all have their pros and cons. I've been mostly swapping between computer, and pen and paper for a while now, and I think I prefer pen and paper for a first draft. It's so nice not to be distracted, which is what happens if I'm on my computer  :drat: :pc:
I do still use my computer for writing, but mostly for stuff that I had already started on my computer, or if I'm struck with an idea and can't stand to waste time moving to a notebook

I would like to add in a mobile phone! While I use a computer to do most of my polished and final writing; most of my drafting, ideas and first roughs are done on my phone!

Also I really wonder how many people in the past used typewriters for off the cuff writing.. Maybe some did, but I once knew an older man who was a writer from the 1940s onward and never switched to computers, he would never have sat down to write a fresh text at his typewriter. He always drafted out with a pencil first, usually two of three rough drafts, and only moved them to the typewriter once he was 90% of the way complete.

So I suppose I treat my phone like a pen and paper and my laptop more like a typewriter! I know the pen and paper might be more classy, but often I like using the phone because if Im in public its anonymous, no one thinks twice if they see you on your phone and no one bothers you - so if your writing things down, particularly if you are describing what you see or observing life around you, people really don't notice a person on their phone.

It really depends. Sometimes I use pencil and paper to write things down, usually for stuff I plan to do during the day. When it comes to the computer, I type it down on either Google Docs or Ellipsus.

Like Melon I am also phone-first writer. I used Google Drive for a long time (nearly 10 years!) before finally migrating my stuff away. Now I write drafts on my phone, sometimes even edit them, and then do a final version on PC. Occasionally I write loose ideas or a rough draft down on a notebook I keep at my desk. Sometimes the thoughts from my brain come to me in a specific way that calls for one format over the other (e.g. stream of consciousness on phone vs mindful formatting on paper).

EDIT: I assumed the question was about writing as a hobby, which wasn't specified by the OP. For work I exclusively write on the computer due to the amount of reports I need to have on me. I jot down notes in a notebook which I transfer to PC asap.

most of the time, I write on my PC. I've gotten so used to doing it here that it's hard to go back to my phone unless I don't have other options. I will only really write on my phone if I'm too tired to sit at the table (I like using a separate keyboard for writing over the one on the laptop, it's a lot more comfortable to do so, so I don't like moving it over to the bed).

However, I used to mostly write on my phone as a kid, especially in middle school. Tho writing fanfiction that doesn't come up to 600 words as a kid is a lot different than what I do now (in length at least, I tend to write longer things when in the mood)  :ok: Nowadays it's really a struggle to make myself to that hahahah.

@Melooon @BlazingCobaltX I can't believe I forgot about writing on the phone! I've done that so much too. Added it as an option  :4u:

I write mostly on my computer; I find it easier and more practical to sit and write (and since I can type with my eyes closed, I can look out the window and keep writing if my eyes need a break). Phone screens are too small for me, but I do sometimes write on my notes app if I'm struck with inspiration and I don't have access to a computer.

Though recently I've discovered that if I use pen and paper to write, it's easier to get into the flow of things. I don't do it much, because it's faster to type, but I do find it useful from time to time if I really want to write but I'm stuck, and that usually gives me a pretty okay base to work with when I rewrite it on my computer :]

I really like writing on paper, so that’s what I stick to, always use pencil for drafts and pen for final texts. I actually have separate notebooks for that. I’d like to use my computer more, but the spellchecker is completely broken, it won’t change to portuguese no matter what I do!

This question made me curious. I asked about it to my dad since computers only became widespread here a bit later, so until the late 90s people still worked with typewriters. He told me that he’d write first directly in the typewriter, then correct whatever was needed with a pen  :omg:  that was what all his workmates would do too. There was a single computer there, which a higher up would use to rewrite what they had done on paper! Turns out the typewriter was the draft, and the computer was the final text.

it really depends on what i'm writing! i write down my quick notes, creative writing and various thoughts on my phone for easy access, then copy them over to my laptop. usually when i write down school notes i write on my tablet, it serves as a neat digital notebook that's similar to something more traditional! i've been using my laptop more often for writing lately though since i really like the streamlined formatting it gives me, but i can't really write too much on my laptop for long cuz it gives a headache, and it's a big hassle frantically typing onto my laptop every time there's a discussion  , so i go for a mix between the three!

I do my rough drafts on paper. I've recently gotten into using fountain pens, and I like the physicality of it. I also like being able to visualize my edits more; I don't just backspace, I cross it out, and I don't just add words in seamlessly, I have to draw arrows. The first version I do on my computer is always my second or even third draft, and I end up printing it out in order to edit.

my computer most of the time, unless i just have a big string of thoughts i need to get out and i don't want to forget anything. then, i'll do voice to text on my phone and copy the transcript to google docs. and then i'll just edit it. i speak really fast sometimes so i have a ton of misspelled or incorrect words when i do that. but it helps a lot for times like that lol.  :seal:

my real life handwriting is pretty sloppy so i don't tend to handwrite things important, especially if i need to show it to someone else.
