So, as the title states, I'm curious about what musicans really drew you into your current favourite genre of music!! I know not everyone has a favourite genre, since sometimes it can be hard to say what your taste really falls into, but in that case I'd just like to hear about an artist with a unique style you like  :dog:

For me, I have to say that I got into lofi/slacker rock from the early 2010s Car Seat Headrest albums. I didn't have a lot of exposure to that genre before I started listening to them, but turns out I really like the sound and so that's mostly what I listen to nowadays. (I'd like to find more obscure bands in the genre, if anyone happens to have any recommendations as well)

I'm also casually into Vocaloid (less so a genre and moreso an instrument, but I digress), which I was introduced to by Maretu and the Kagerou Project circa 2018. Maretu's still my favourite Vocaloid artist to this day and the Kagerou Project will always have a place in my heart :4u:

While it does not hold the position of ULTIMATE FAVOURITE GENRE OF ALL TIME, Math Rock still habitates a large, cozy looking vicinity inside my heart. I'd say it's at my top #3. Anyway, back to topic.

I had a huge math rock phase that started about two years ago. It was also my first exposure to the magical side of YouTube Algorithm. I'd spend my afternons listening to countless obscure albuns, some of which I don't remember the name and probably never will find again.

The album that first got me to this wondrous musical spetacle, though, was Okurimono, by Hyakkei. I was mesmerized with the all the complex arranges, haunting melodic work and ABSOLUTELY INSANE DRUMS MAN. It's simply gorgeous, and, just like the album, I don't have words to express how much I love it.

Through it I'd come to discover so many other wonderful albums! Right after listening to this I found Moenie and Kitchi, by Gregory and the Hawk, and damn that album is my life.

Nowadays I don't listen to Math Rock as insanely (and probably annoyingly as well) as I used to, but sometimes I still like to go back and get som JAMS YO.

my music genre 'taste' is so diverse it may as well be its own planet at this point XD
i guess i'll just talk about Vocaloid because it's already large enough as is :P

gotta be Dixie Flatline or wowaka. one of the two, or Agoaniki-P (the person who made Double Lariat). honestly these plus WONDERFULOPPORTUNITY, Mitchie M, Pinnochio-P, 40Meter-P, and various others were probably what trapped me into Vocaloid for these many years lmao
i've gone off DECO*27 hard, he used to be good but anything post-Vampire is kinda... bad to me, to put it bluntly. i just can't stand it. but Ai Kotoba and Coward Mont Blanc were amazing. The Vampire's... okay? but it just doesn't have the same feeling Ai Kotoba or Coward Mont Blanc have ever given me.

Dixie Flatline made Just be Friends, wowaka made Rolling Girl and a few others, as i said Adoaniki-P made Double Lariat, Kemu makes amaazing tracks and so does Neru, etc.
i think the tracks that probably trapped me here'd be ODDS&ENDS, Double Lariat, Six Trillion Years and an Overnight Story, Dear, HAKUMEI, Gigantic Girl, Chain Girl, or many that i'm forgetting right now lmao
now i still love Vocaloid, just the more indie/doujin stuff, usually it's older things. i love Convenience Store now, it reminds me so bad of that early 10s chiptune-dubstep kinda thing.

that all's pretty much what's gotten me so into it, but i guess Project DIVA too to an extent. half the PVs i watched were from Project DIVA Arcade more than anything, later most would be from Project DIVA Future Tone.
i've only more recently played Project DIVA myself, it's all the PSP games (because i have PPSSPP, my actual PSP is dying) and they're really good!

Oooooh, that one is easy ! I remember somewhere in 2011 I was trying to find creative commons music and for an unknown reason I am shown a retro anime thumbnail which I clicked by curiosity. My ears got absolutely teleblasted by "Overdrive" from "LazerHawk" ! The video is this one At the time I almost yelled in front of my screen : "YES ! THIS EXACTLY THE KIND OF SOUND I'M LOOKING FOR !!!"

Turns out the genre was called "Synthwave" and oh boy, I got deep down the rabbit hole and now I'm an absolute synthead that only listens to this genre and its subgenre. It scratched the musical itch that "plunderphonics" never scratched properly.

My music taste is various shades of "heavy" from pop rock to alt rock to something else rock to nu-metal to metalcore, etc, so rather than one genre I generally gesture at. All of that, whenever someone asks me about my music. I mean half of those bands aren't really sure which genre they are themselves, so.

And I dunno, maybe there were some inspirations earlier, but I don't remember them. What I do remember, however, is hearing The Rasmus in a movie when I was about... 12 or 13 I want to say? I liked the song, my mom liked the song too, which is important, because she later bought two CDs of theirs and blasted them in her car everywhere we went, which led to me knowing more songs, which led to me exploring the rest of the discography on my own, which led to me looking for similar music... etc etc.

With years I started getting somewhat heavier - I mean, I do not consider it THAT heavy, I am definitely leagues away from the real heavy hitters of the genre palette, but the same mom now complains my music is hard to listen to so. I guess that happened! (She recently got into early Linkin Park. Liar.)

So anyway, yeah, The Rasmus landed me in my amalgamation of rock-metal-ish music library. Ironically, they themselves are a bit too light for me now, but not entirely so
