What is a Guest Post

Quote
If you read about "guest posting" today, you'll mostly hear about it in the context of SEO, but the practice was common before search engines. People who ran E/N sites increased their reach by affiliating with other E/N webmasters. One of the best ways to do this was to have the followers of one website be introduced to the webmaster of another website through a guest post. It's more than just a link in the side bar. It's content that encourages you to explore. It's the comic book crossover of the Internet.

By writing for the site you get your name, a description, an image avatar, and a link to your stuff on the side of your article (bottom on mobile). You also get the opportunity to talk about something that's important to you: whether that's something you're working on or just a subject you know a lot about. It's a natural way to drive traffic towards anything you want really.

I write about the subject more in depth in this article.
https://goeshard.org/2025/05/07/do-you-want-to-guest-post-an-article-for-goeshardorg/

---

The best articles would be "I know a lot about this thing I want to tell you about and I have a lot of links, videos, and content to go with it."

Or "I've been working on this thing and this is why you should check it out. This is what I do on my website/whatever, come check it out."

---

If you're interested in this or have an idea, let me know! You can talk to me privately in DM or right here in the thread.

Also if you run a blog, maybe you would like to do guest posts there as well. It's a cool thing I don't see very often that I used to see in the 2000s all the time.

I have some ideas for anyone who is not sure what they could write about:

- Show off your favorite destinations on the everyone website.
- Tell us about your favorite albums in a genre of music
- Did you read a book recently?
- Do you want to get people started reverse engineering x86 and think you have a good place to start?
- Did you make a webgame that is cool that you have a postmortem to share with us?

Hey! It's been a long time since I've logged into Melonland.

I sort of assumed probably no one would want to do this, since I've asked around a few places and very few people responded at all let alone actually submitted something, so I kinda forgot about this thread.  :innocent:

One person did submit something though. Here's that post if you're interested
https://goeshard.org/2025/05/20/snow-deformation/

Now I'll try to respond to everyone.

Sorry to be an ignoramus, but what is an E/N site? Thank you!

In the early 2000s, from about 1999-2002 or so, there was a genre of website called an "Everything/Nothing" website. Today we would just call them blogs but this word didn't really exist back then. When someone refers to an E/N site, they are referring to the specific culture of blogs in the very early 2000s. It was a site with written content where a staff of writers usually tried to have daily posts. The posts could be about anything and random edgy humor was the most common denominator among them, which is what set them apart from other sites at the time.

Something Awful, Stile Project, Fark, Zug, and tons more that no one will remember because they were never popular outside their circles in the first place.

By today's standards these sites could be considered very edgy. They could go from, "Let's have a look at the Pumpkins I made for Halloween" to "I found this disgusting crime scene photos and anarchist cookbooks, let's have a look!" Really nothing was off the table. And while not every site participated in the same kind of edgy content, pretty much no one was above sharing traffic with such sites if it meant getting visitors to your page.

By 2006, E/N sites were not as popular anymore (except for the most popular ones that managed to make money) because most people who used to run them had moved on to things like LiveJournal or MySpace. And I would say the term "E/N" died off well before that.

As for my genre...*sheepishly looks at the currently open ModPlug window*

Is that to say that you would want to do music? Music is a great topic and it matches the "goeshard" brand pretty well. I should really write more music posts than I do.

I'd maybe be intersted if this is still open? Maybe?

It is open. There's no time limit on this, as long as the site is up I will take submissions.

Hi! I would love to be a part of this!

Kandi? Is that like the stuff that ravers dress up with? Sorry I'm ignorant.

No subject (okay almost no subject) is off the table, but my favorite would be something lost media related. But ultimately, whatever you're the most motivated to write something good on is probably the best subject.

---

My DMs are open if you want to submit something privately. Or here is fine too.

Partial submissions are okay, too, like if you want to check how I feel about what you're doing before investing a lot of time into it.

Thanks to everyone for the interest and sorry for taking so long to get back to you all.
