:defrag: Liminal Spaces :defrag:

Liminal spaces. In which a liminal space is the time between the 'what was' and the 'next.' It is a place of transition, waiting, and not knowing. Liminal space is where all transformation takes place, if we learn to wait and let it form us.

In other words, empty places where it's not supposed to be empty. What vibe do these photos (show below) give us?

Empty. Unusual. Nostalgic. Sad.

Do they remind you of anything in particular? Maybe a meme, like the backrooms, or something more interesting, like a childhood memory?

Anyways... I'm more interested to see what you all have to say, so i'll stop here. Tell me at least one memory that reminded you of a liminal space. What were you doing in that space? and what did you feel after seeing it?

looks like i just discovered i have kenophobia

anyways
the photos remind me of a fair few things from when i was little.
i remembered going to places, many of which i probably shouldn't have been in. i've been in so many places because i just generally wander there out of curiosity. but i especially remembered things from the city's hospital, my old primary school, other peoples' houses, etc and probably more.

especially indoor areas that are under construction; there's actually one in the shopping plaza in my city right now that's like this. all it has is fake 'turf' (that green plastic meant to be like grass), just a couple short tables, and like four wooden/plastic chairs (also short.) it looks like it's meant for kids but i've seen teenagers and adults there too, usually to calm.
but half the time the lights are off, and even with just natural light it's pretty dim, especially near the back end of it. even when the lights are on elsewhere, it's still a little dim.

i do like dim lighting, but i guess i'm the opposite of claustrophobic lol? i like small spaces and especially cozy ones that aren't overstimulating :P
i think i remembered some areas in my old primary school where it's been cleaned, but nobody knew what to do with it. especially those that have a few chairs in them but there's no staff or kids there, it might've been intended for use but was forgotten.

i love liminal spaces!!!

they always give me a feeling of comfort, rather than anything eerie

being in them makes me less anxious. i stop worrying about the past or future and just exist in the present

i do a lot of photography of them, they're on my website :3c

The local conservatory used to look like this when empty until they filled the corridors with potted plants.

Echoing this. I live in a big city, and though it isn't the noisiest not busiest one in the world, it can get overwhelming (even though I do like ambient the activity and presence of other people) and liminal spaces offer a nice respite from that. There are quite a few tucked into the side of the larger streets where I live, like Rues Vertes, back alleys, and hidden lots, which are primarily the haunts of stray cats and weeds.

Liminal spaces make me think of save points in video games, a deserted and quiet spot away from overworld or level music, enemy spawns, and the plot.

oooh i love that way of thinking about them

i live in a small-ish town with not much of a nightlife so at night pretty much anywhere can be one

i'd love to live in a city though and find those spaces, feel like they'd mean a bit more once they're scarce

I get that oftentimes liminal spaces are supposed to be considered creepy in context, due to evoking feelings of loneliness, but I always find them relaxing to look at.  :4u: Sometimes I just want to sit in one of the places pictured and take a nap.

I love the backrooms. Personally, the concept of it is cool and the surrounding liminal imagery but also just the whole "collective creative writing" aspect of it. Since something like the backrooms is so functionally infinite, anyone could theoretically create their own level and it is at least plausibly "real". And whether they use inspiration from real liminal spaces or personal nostalgia or not, itw always cool to see people sharing their ideas and writing

sometimes i look at liminal spaces and just get a sense of sadness. these places were lived in once or people used to frequent these areas regularly, memories were made there and now they've become husks of their former selves. the abandoned mall types of liminal spaces fall into this, i feel   but i understand why some people might find them creepy instead

Its a bittersweet feeling. Its as if i was a kid again, being in that one place which felt/looked like this. Its like having a picture of a memory, a memory of a time, where shadows were darker, and lights brighter.

I could get addicted to these. It feels... like home? In the same time it feels... so distant, the word "Hiraeth" would explain it perfectly.

Malls/Playgrounds that look like from the late 90s or early 00s, oh god... Such simpler times. It gives me the same feeling, as if i would play Animal Crossing Wild World on my Nintendo DS. Watching early SpongeBob, playing 00s Anime MMO's and all that absolute GOLDEN stuff.

Basically, a place that used to fill your heart with Warmth and Safety, corroded into what it is today. Abandoned. A reminder that everything will Pass.
