This is the topic that resurfaces every once in a while in fandom, regardless of where you participate in it. I struggled a bit with the title but did my best to portray a very specific and unforcinatlly loud minority that makes fandom a harder place to be in sometimes due to mean behaviour. You can read the article here!

I'm also interested to see if anyone has had similar experiences or has something to add to this. I feel like the older I get, the more of these kinds of things come up (though I do avoid them for the most part and hear a lot of them from a second source). And most of these definitely come from younger people too, which I also think says something.

hmmm i don't know much about himejoshi but i could have a guess at this all.

i could understand a bit especially since the vast majority of anime fans are cishet guys with little regard for anyone else. and the fact that all anime more recently has fanservice doesn't make it any better. there were some good ones and ones you could avoid, but good luck in today's climate.

i think the himejoshi part being both a minority and being loud could stem from that a bit. especially since the queer community has exploded in population (at least in terms of people finding out they're queer lol) and there's probably this weird divide between the two.
basing this off little knowledge but passionate about, okay?

probably because two sides that don't want to have anything to do with each other, my best guess. hardly anyone wants to accept the other and especially social media kinda hammers that into us even more. but that being said as well...
i've also had firsthand experience with some people like what the person's describing i think. well in a completely different context, but still.

dunno will probably listen to others here :P

This isn't really a new thing, anime has always had a lot of fanservese. It's just that before, the ones that didn't have it came to the west and exploded in popularity a lot more. There were some with fanservese even then for sure, it just wasn't as visible as before. For every cool and interesting one that comes to the west with dub or sub, there's at least 20 that has a load of fanservice that don't come or come way later but are not as noticed.

Oddly enough, this isn't usually the case with people who mostly like m/m ships, it's quite the opposite. They've always been nice and pleasant people in general (obviously, every group has its bad apples, seen it all myself).

There is this thing where people whose primary ships are f/f do not enjoy when others like m/m even if it's not their main ship, and I do find that odd, since the opposite almost never happens. I don't doubt that there's a sense of sadness that not a lot of people like what you do, though one group seems to be a lot more hostile than the other. I do whish this does calm down on some point in the larger scale, since it would help fix a lot of things.

yea that's true to an extent.

fanservice is real common especially in it's origin country but it feels like it's harder to enjoy it in general for me at least.
this might be a little unconventional but - as i said the majority of anime fans are cishet guys. i have boundaries and stuff so i'd rather not see something or something else in some cases.

it feels though now it's a little different? especially what feels like weird pressure to 'be the same' or something. a lot of VRoid avatars whether innocent or not are very similar in proportions and whatnot. i dunno it just feels harder to find people like me without getting someone heated up my own butt.
then i wonder if there's genuinely something off with me since they got heated - logically, no. it's more just opinion, people more recently don't seem to be as accepting of other opinions in general, or so it seems anyways. i don't mean any harm but more generally i've only noticed it with anime and adjacent, not any of the other things i like oddly enough. as i said i just don't want people mouthing off at me (or anyone in general tbh)

whoopie that went offtrack.
i think though at the end of the day it's probably influenced by social media for this. in general there was a lot of this or that in anime and always has been, but i think there's too much "you must like X or Y or die" now, like i just said.
