I think what's going on here is that, because of the massive amounts of capital that companies like Meta and OpenAI have gotten from venture capital, they're using that newfound power to dominate every other industry and influence governments. They've also been way more daring than usual, doing stuff like surveillance glasses and whatever. I believe the end goal is for these companies to secretly create a permanent foothold in infrastructure via coercive means. Luckily there's projects to undermine this stuff they're doing. And recently, people young and old and even in the government have started becoming suspicious of it and voting against these laws. We should always intend to keep our internet running the same as it was despite all the attacks by corporations on us.

Yeah, this is slimey. This is basically the kinds of news that inspired my recent blog post about How To Run Your Own Wireguard VPN. My point was to show that it's impossible to realistically age-gate VPN use, because I show how you can use free or cheap VM hosting (GCloud, Azure, AWS, etc... all of which have free trials; I use Linode) to spin-up a VPN whenever you want one, in whatever country you want your endpoint, and even better it's pretty-much impossible to detect because the IP address you get assigned will probably never have been used as a VPN endpoint before.
