tl;dr: best-resolution.danq.dev lets you put a "best viewed at: any resolution" 88×31 GIF on your site... that dynamically changes to tell your visitors that they're already using exactly the right resolution (examples below)!

You don't have to make your sites responsive; it's fine if you don't. But if you do, you might be inclined to show off the fact with a 88×31 like this, right?

I got to thinking... wouldn't it be a cool Easter Egg if my button could instead say... the exact resolution the visitor was using. So if they were using something wacky like 1249×851 (don't laugh; that's the actual resolution of my browser right now!), they'd see this:

So I made it. And by the time I'd made it, I realised it could be even more: it could be kinda like a webring of sites that are all in on the same Easter Egg.

Sooo... if you put the button on your site I can add your button to the rotation of sites that get shown when people click on it. So a visitor on your site sees - via this Easter Egg - that your site works, apparently, at their weird and unusual resolution like, say, 641×919... then they can click your button and see a random selection of five other sites that also work at that (and any other) resolution.

Part 88×31 button, part responsive design promotion, part Easter Egg, and part webring, this might be my stupidest project so far this year.

But if you want in, you're welcome to join me! Full instructions are at https://best-resolution.danq.dev/

This is super fun and oddly subversive  :omg: I'm a fan  :ozwomp:

Maybe there are other sorts of dynamic 88x31 buttons possible... maybe some sort of 88x31 generator engine could be made to power them all efficiently hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm  :eyes:

Yeah, I was wondering about one that did a "best viewed with" but adapted to whatever browser you're using, but that felt a bit more-dull than resolutions.

Suddenly I'm having flashbacks to one of the first Perl CGIs I ever wrote, which was an image hitcounter generator. That's going back a way!

Didn't had to worry about bot traffic back then, did ya? Page gets served, counter goes up by 1 :-) Easy times!

There were a few early scrapers doing their thing - there's a reason the robots.txt spec goes all the way back to 1994! - but they were low-traffic compared to today.

Plus, scrapers didn't usually download images at all, so you'd just do the +1 when the hit counter image was loaded, stitch together images of digits to make the final image showing the new total, and then deliver it to the user.

Very different time!
