.meow is a planned upcoming top-level domain that has been applied for by a queer non-profit organisation. Funds towards registering .meow domains will go towards queer projects, with registration being open to everyone.

They have recently opened a fundraiser on Kickstarter to support the registration costs.

To quote their site:

A domain for the Queer Community,
by the Queer Community

The Project

A fun domain with a serious mission — and a way to turn every URL into community support.

The dotMeow foundation is a queer-owned, queer-operated non-profit with one goal: to turn internet infrastructure into community support.

We’re applying to run our own generic top-level domain (gTLD — the bit after the dot, like .com). Each time someone registers a .meow domain, most of that money comes directly to us. Instead of pocketing it, we’ll funnel it straight back into queer people and projects worldwide.

Other queer-coded TLDs exist, like .lgbt and .gay, but we’re doing things differently:

•All profits go to community causes – By statute, anything not spent on operations or growth must fund queer initiatives.
•A Mozilla-style model (eventually) – We’ll split into a foundation (for grants and governance) and a technical company (to run .meow and potentially other registries). Even our technical work will generate resources for the community.
•Focused on trans issues – As a trans-led team, we’re structuring .meow around the needs of the communities we’re part of.

This all started as a joke — a "how hard could it be?" over drinks. Now we’re deep in the ICANN process, with support secured to lower our costs.

Fundraising

To finish the ICANN application process, we need to raise the final fees by April 2026. That’s where our Kickstarter comes in.

When you back the campaign, even at the lowest tier, you’ll get a voucher for one year of .meow domain registration at wholesale cost. Here’s how it works:

•You save. Get your first year of a .meow domain for less than retail.
•Registrars win. They gain new customers with no payment processing costs.
•The community benefits. Your pledge helps launch a TLD that will keep funding queer initiatives for years to come.

We’re lining up registrar partners now. Any registrar can participate, and we’ll keep an updated list on our site and socials once the campaign launches. For enquiries, reach us via email at info@dotmeow.org.

If successful, .meow will launch in 2027. From there, every domain sold will directly support queer communities worldwide.

Do note that it is possible that their application can get rejected: Check the FAQ on the Kickstarter before backing.

I hope the project pans out. The indie web relying on less corporate infrastructure is a great thing.

Cute! I hope they succeed, but launching a gTLD is amazingly difficult (source: my partner works for a major registry services provider, and I share an office with her - I hear a lot of horror stories about how difficult it is to make these things take off!

I love this! I hope it works out, a TLD supporting queer causes and a super cute one on top of that. I would love to have my site end with .meow :3 Took a look at their site and it looks like it's well managed from what I can tell, hopefully this doesn't fizzle out and hopefully ICANN are nice about it. I put in for the kickstarter, thanks for sharing  :dog:
